We are seeking a highly-motivated professional employee with experience in providing superior customer service in support of our mission to promote integrity, efficiency, and accountability within the Department of Justice. You will work to gain practical work experience that augments your academic course of study.
Duties
Interns in this position may work either full or part-time, and work schedules are flexible around the student's academic schedule. Student interns accrue vacation and sick-leave and are eligible for health, life, dental, and vision insurance. Upon successful completion of the internship program, you may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a full-time permanent position.
As a Communications Intern with the OIG, you will:
Work with the Office of Communications staff to brainstorm, pitch, strategize, and create a variety of communications products including emails, newsletters, photos, videos, interactive web content, and other digital media.
Works with the Office of Communications staff to plan and execute events such as a speaker series, town halls, awards ceremonies, and conferences.
Photograph people, events, and landscapes in a variety of styles, including artistic and documentary.
Video and audio record live events, interviews, and b-roll in a variety of styles, including artistic and documentary.
Use Adobe Creative Suite and other software (e.g., ARCGIS Online, Power BI) to produce compelling and high-quality digital media materials for public consumption.
Support the Office of Communications by assisting with various other assignment.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- You must be able to pass a background investigation and credit check and drug testing. You will be subject to random drug testing.
- You must be registered for the Selective Service, if applicable.
- You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Your application package must support your responses to the questionnaire.
- You will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours a week during the school year and may work full time when school is not in session.
- If selected you must complete and sign a Pathways Participant Agreement and will be required to provide the OIG Pathways Program Officer with a copy of your transcript verifying continuous enrollment, GPA and grade requirements each semester.
- You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship (failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate termination).
- The student will participate in an OIG-wide mentorship program.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis.
Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship.
Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program.
Minimum Qualifications: In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications stated above, you must also meet the minimum qualifications for the appropriate grade level, or applicable general or specialized experience, or a combination of both
To qualify for the GS-5 level, you must have completed 4 academic years of post-high school education leading to a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent degree.
To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must have completed 1 full academic years of graduate level education or meet one of the following:
Have a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement (defined below) in film and media production, journalism, public affairs, digital storytelling, communication, photography, or other fields related to the position; OR
Have a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement (defined below) that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the related fields identified above, and required the use of tools such as Adobe Creative Suite
Superior Academic Achievement is defined as: a) Class Standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university, or major subdivision; b) Grade Point Average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum. If more than 10 percent of total undergraduate credit hours are non-graded, i.e. pass/fail, CLEP, CCAF, DANTES, military credit, etc., you cannot qualify based on GPA; c) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this position). (If qualifying based on class standing or honor society membership, provide appropriate documentation)Preferred Majors include: Communications, Digital Design, Multimedia Production, Digital Storytelling, or Journalism.
A portfolio with examples of your work must be submitted for review by our panel of subject matter experts.
Education
You must provide an UNOFFICIAL copy of your transcript or course listing with your application to verify enrollment as well as meeting GPA and grade requirements. Failure to provide a copy of your transcript or course listing will disqualify your application.
You will be required to provide a copy of your transcript verifying enrollment, GPA and grade requirements each semester/quarter.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above education requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is your responsibility to timely provide such evidence by submitting proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency with your application materials.
