This position is located at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. The incumbent serves as a Cemetery Caretaker Work Leader for Interment Operations at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. The primary purpose of this position is to facilitate field work operations in order to provide dignified burials to veterans and their eligible dependents in accordance with the NCA's Standards and Measures effecting shrine status.
Duties
Incumbent serves as the interment work leader for six (6) wage grade employees in accomplishing interment operations. The highest level of non- supervisory work led is two (2) WG-5716-08's (Engineering Equipment Operators) and (4) WG-4754-06's (Cemetery Caretakers). Incumbent provides
assignments, communicates direction and monitors daily work of all full-time wage grade employees, temporary staff and Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) patients. Receives direction from the cemetery foreman and/or director and coordinates the daily distribution of workload. Passes on instructions to other workers received from the foreman and/or director, gets work started by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group he/she leads. Ensures the outcome of work assignments comply with stated directions, instructions and standards. The work leader sees to it that needed plans, blueprints, equipment, materials and tools are available and in proper working condition, and that any needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Qualifications

Your background must demonstrate work involved in landscaping, grounds keeping, or other related trades experience that includes the use of hand tools and/or power tools, and the safe operation of related machinery and equipment used in cemetery caretaking practices, as described in the duties section of the announcement.

Physical Requirements: Heavy physical effort is used by the work leader in constantly reaching, lifting, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of tools, controls to operate the equipment and attachments. When operating equipment, considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The incumbent also performs more exacting work such as digging either manually or with a backhoe to close tolerances, requiring considerable strength and manipulation of controls. Because of the location of the work, the work leader is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. Occasionally lift objects weighing over 50 pounds when loading and unloading cargo.
Working Conditions: Work is performed predominantly outdoors in all types of weather which includes extreme heat, cold, wind and rain. Incumbent is exposed to moving vehicles and equipment, dirt, dust, mud, pesticides and fumes from motors and vehicle exhaust. Incumbent may be exposed to noise levels which exceeds 85dba and may affect hearing. The wearing of hearing protection is mandatory when operating equipment that meets or exceeds 85dba. Incumbent may be subject to minor cuts, scrapes and bruises.
