This position is located with the Medical Records Department, Inpatient Unit at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM. The primary purpose is to provide a the complete and accurate diagnostic and procedural coded data is present for research, epidemiology, outcomes, and statistical analysis, financial and strategic planning, optimal reimbursement, evaluation of quality of care and communication to support the patient's treatment.
Duties

Quantitative Analysis-Performs comprehensive review of the records to assure the presence of all components parts, such as: correct name, health record number, signatures and dates where required, and all reports which appear to be indicated by the treatment rendered.
Qualitative Analysis-Evaluates the record for documentation, consistency, accuracy and correlation of recorded data, such as medical necessity and modifier usage. Ensures that final diagnosis as stated by the physician is valid, complete and accurately reflects the care and treatment rendered.
Assigns the HCPCS level II codes to facilitate the coding of supplies and services provided by physicians, therapist, home health, outpatient department, and other caregivers. Enters all required data components identified and outlined by Indian Health Services (IHS) Patient Education protocols and standards, and all indicators for the Government Performance Reporting Act (GPRA).
Enters transaction code and data from charges tickets or super bills, to optimize reimbursement collection for the facility. Adheres to all official coding guidelines, conventions, standards of ethical coding and rules established by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) American Medical Association (AMA), Center for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) and the IHS.
Provides ongoing education, updates and briefs physicians, nursing staff, and health care personnel within the immediate organization or work unit, on coding updates, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
for GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Analyzing, interpreting, and abstracting data from clinical documentation and/or electronic health record to assure the presence and compliance of all component parts of the record; performing quality and medico-legal analysis to ensure requirements of the record are complete, accurate, and reflects sufficient data to justify the diagnosis and warranted treatment; and reviewing, assigning, and correcting diagnostic and procedure codes.
for GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: performing the full range of medical coding; assigning International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology, Fourth Edition (CPT-4) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes; and applying coding knowledge to a wide range of specialty areas.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
