The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the GLAHS-WLA VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Maintenance and Operations section, Engineering Department. The incumbent maintains a constant state of readiness of a wide variety of mobile and stationary equipment typically powered by large diesel engines, (up to 16 cylinder).

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Incumbent is responsible for the repair, modification and maintenance and periodic testing of all emergency generators. The generator partial inventory consists of (2) Electromotive 2000 K.W. 16 cylinder generator, two (2) Detroit 8 cylinder generators, one (1) Detroit 500 K.W. 16 cylinder generator, one (1) Caterpillar 1500 KW 12 cylinder generator, and one (1) 6 cylinder Allis- Chalmers generator. There are numerous other smaller generators. Engine types include EMD, Perkins, Caterpillar, Cummins, Isuzu and John Deere. Incumbent must be able to troubleshoot, calibrate, repair, design and modify, racks, injectors, and valves. Check air boxes for excessive wear to pistons, change out power packs, check rod bearings, feed pipes, set racks, check torque or cylinder heads, maintain turbo air cleaners, check and change oil, oil filters, fuel filters and repair modify and maintain all associated component systems and controls. Maintain emergency generators and the large Diesel engines that start and pick up the entire electrical load within 10 seconds when the lights go out. This job requires skill and knowledge of all of the interfaced systems to make them all come together and to rely on a completely automatic start to provide Emergency Power. The generators have a variety of interconnected systems. These include: (1) Integrated electric, air, and hydraulic systems, (2) Complex state-of-the-art electrical and electronic systems requiring a substantial amount of training and specialized diagnostic equipment to identify problems for replacement of standard components or for referral to electronics mechanics, (3) Intricate timing requirements such as dual engines or complex fuel injections systems, e.g., those with several injectors which have precise timing sequences. (4) Numerous interconnected gear-reduction systems or other similarly complex systems. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, crawling, occasionally working in cramped and awkward positions and working off ladders and scaffolding. Incumbent is also exposed to the possibility of burns, cuts, bruises and electric shocks. Working Conditions: Work is often performed outdoors, in bright daylight and potentially in the rain, work is sometimes required after hours to respond to emergency call outs, inside generator rooms while generators are running, lighting is typically ok, but will also work using a flashlight in less lit areas. Incumbent is subject to high temperatures, dust, grease, diesel fuel and gasoline smell and possible contact with these and other chemicals. The environment can be very noisy, and slip trip and fall hazards exist.
