This position provides technical and clerical support to all sections of the Clinical Pathology Service at the San Francisco VA Medical Center in San Francisco, CA.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties: Types blood bank records; types patient requisition data using a computer terminal; retrieves test data, test information and reference values via the computers, and communicates the information using the electronic mail option; Processes microbiological specimens ensuring physiological state of the properties is maintained. Biological fluids include blood urine, cerebrospinal fluid, ascites fluid, stool, sputum, thoracic fluid, bone marrow, etc.; Performs phlebotomy by venipuncture or capillary puncture via bedside or lab testing; Prepares and advises patients for collection of timed blood, urine and stool specimens; Prepares specimens for reference laboratory analysis; Enters patient demographic data and tests requested electronically, and records priority status; Obligates and verifies control point fund expenditures; monitors/tracks obligations/expenditures; Prepares procurement requests; and reconciles purchases and payment of invoices; Maintains the automated inventory system for commonly ordered laboratory supplies; Provides input to management for the budget plan; Submits expenditure reports for each control point and laboratory services to management, and Performs other related duties as required. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Qualifications

TYPING PROFICIENCY: This position requires the skills of a qualified typist. In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements, you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute. AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. AND SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. In order to qualify for this position, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specific qualifying specialized experience for this position (which should be documented on your resume) is: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.Your answer will be verified against information provided on your resume. If your resume does not clearly support your response by addressing your work experience in detail you will be disqualified. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successfully completed one-half year of graduate education or internship that is directly related to the work of this position. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is approximately 25% sedentary. The remaining time is in standing, walking, stooping, reaching, and some light lifting.
