As an Investigator Support Assistant (Bilingual-Spanish) at the GS-1802-6, you will be part of Los Angeles District Office, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If selected, you will assist and support EEOC Investigators and Staff who investigate cases for the lead civil rights agency responsible for enforcing federal laws that prohibit employment discrimination and perform related education and outreach activities.

Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to: Receives telephone calls and personal visits from individuals and their representative seeking information regarding filing charges/complaints of discrimination. Obtains relevant information concerning the allegation of the potential charge/complaint and counsels the individual as to whether EEOC or some other organization has jurisdiction. Secures needed information, and documents information received. With the assistance of the unit supervisor defines the problem and identifies relevant facts. Reviews information regarding timeliness, bases, and standing under the laws governing discrimination complaints, and reports findings to supervisor. Maintains files on cases requiring additional information. Follows-up with charging parties/complainants, when necessary, to secure additional information. Types a variety of materials such as memoranda, letters, charges, reports and related documents into final form. This duty comprises approximately 25 percent of the employee's work time. Searches files and reference materials for information relating to complaints and prepares a variety of reports. Communicates effectively by speaking, writing, and translating information from the Spanish language to the English language and vice versa.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service
  • Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period
  • This position requires a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute (WPM).
  • Must maintain a high level of proficiency and remain fluent in speaking, writing, and communicating in Spanish. This includes speaking, writing, and communicating, fluently, information from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish.

Qualifications

For the GS-6: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: clerical support work (i.e. receiving telephone calls and providing requested information; filing; scheduling meetings; preparing meeting minutes; generating reports; reviewing and processing correspondence, typing, producing memoranda and a wide range of documents, composing and maintaining reports, standard operating procedures (SOP), etc.); tracking, documenting, gathering and compiling records; preparing travel requests; and ordering supplies. Merit promotion applicants must meet time-in-grade requirement as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS- 6 level. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements (e.g., time-in-grade and qualification requirements) within 30 days of the closing date specified in the vacancy announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
