The position is responsible for delivering a broad array of health care services throughout the Medical Center, and it's various locations that provide in patient care. The Health Aid is responsible for performing selected patient/resident related transports to different areas such as x-ray, CT Scan, MRI, Prosthetics, Sonography and other related areas. The incumbent is expected to develop and demonstrate increasing skills in performing a variety of tasks.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Provides holistic in-patient care to Veterans in a manner conducive to the comfort and safety of those in the facility hospital units, living centers and/or household.
Protects, sustains and nurtures the resident by providing assistance as needed with activities of daily living (ADL), and with other needs as required in accordance with established policies and procedures to assure the highest degree of resident's quality of life and care is maintained.
Provides care for a group of patients/residents of varying age.
Educates and assists inpatients/residents and families in adhering to infection control principles throughout the facility.
Assists as needed with positioning/turning, ambulating, transferring, and escorting inpatients/residents.
Distributes canteen books and incidentals.
Monitors flow of oxygen, replaces empty tanks, and fills personal use portable oxygen.
Performs routine tasks that assist in the implementation of leisure and diversional activities and promotes meaningful use of time that enhances independence, positive self-esteem and relaxing leisure experiences.
Establishes and promotes effective interpersonal relationships and communications with inpatients/residents, families and others.
Maintains inventory control as needed.
Utilize specialized safe patient handling equipment such as ceiling lifts, maxi lifts, wheelchairs, sara steady and electric stretchers following SAVAHCS Safe Patient Handling and Movement Policy.
Transport reports, records, laboratory specimens, x rays, prosthetic equipment, and patient prescriptions to designated areas, excluding control substance.
Access SAVAHCS computer system; CPRS, VISTA, TMS and Microsoft Outlook.

Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with residents requires regular and recurring bending, lifting (not to exceed 35 pounds), reaching, carrying, stooping, stretching and similar activities.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/29/2023.
GS-03 grade level:
One (1) year above high school with course(s) related to the occupation (medical, health, or related fields). or,
Six (6) months of general experience. General Experience: Work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. or,
A combination of education and experience.
Successfully completed post-high school education is qualifying for grades GS-3 through GS-5. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.
Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. For GS-3 level positions, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the 6 months' experience required for GS-3; then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the l year of education that meets the requirements for GS-3. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-3.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
