What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

Duties

As a Supervisory Hydrologist in the Hydrologic Investigation and Research section of the Arizona Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Supervises staff of several projects involved in the collection and analysis of surface-water, groundwater, water-quality, and geologic data as part of the assigned responsibility to perform complex hydrologic studies. Exercises a broad range of supervisory responsibilities, such as: responsibility for ensuring timely performance of work of a satisfactory amount and quality, as well as reviewing, accepting, amending or rejecting work performed; counsels employees on technical work matters, and personally provides or obtains guidance from others for his/her employees on administrative appointments, promotion, or reassignment; is responsible for ensuring equal opportunity for all employees under their supervision in the selection of employees for training, promotions, awards, and recognition, and other career development opportunities. Serves as project team leader of highly complex, large-scaled interdisciplinary hydrologic, water quality, geochemical, and hydraulic engineering investigations, which require developing approaches, standards, methods, guides and procedures for conducting the interpretive study. Serves as a senior expert in the field and as such is responsible for complete, large scale hydrologic investigations by planning, conducting and reporting on interpretive studies. As a senior expert, they represent the bureau on controversial projects. Authors comprehensive USGS scientific reports or journal articles for publication on results of and conclusions on studies and investigations. This includes also critically reviewing reports prepared by other professional personnel. Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands and Work Environment: The work is usually performed in an office setting. However, work time may also be spent periodically visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in either an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, diverse terrain, and safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction, ir an industrial setting subject to noise, fumes, and moving machinery. Both settings may require the use of personal protective equipment. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the scientist complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor. Conditions of Employment of the USGS Watercraft Safety Program: Must be able to take and pass the Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within six (6) months of employment. (Only applicable for those operating a boat). Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification for the duration of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain Wilderness or Advanced First Aid certification for duration of employment. (Only applicable for employees who will be over an hour away from emergency services while on a boat).

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. FOR GS-13 - In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
