This position is located in the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kansas.The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices.

Performing maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings; Installing, modifying, and repairing furniture items, doors, windows, floor coverings, baseboards, and signage; Installing, modifying, and repairing plumbing and electrical systems; Conducting inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned;

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/25/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas, and working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic works in all areas throughout the medical center. Inside areas may be dirty, dusty, and greasy and contain bad odors. The Maintenance Mechanic is: subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds; exposed to moderately high noise levels; exposed to dust, fumes, and dirt; exposed to possible strains, cuts, electrical shock, bruises, burns, and infections; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Outside duties are performed in all types of weather. The use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, clothing, and safety equipment is required as needed.
