About the Position:
The position of a Industrial Hygiene Technician is located within the Bayne Army Community Hospital, Fort Johnson, Louisiana. The incumbent will serve in the Department of Preventive Medicine, Industrial Hygiene Section of a medical treatment facilities (MTFs) within the Southern Regional Medical Command (SRMC), performing various duties to assess work practices and conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers.
This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.
Duties
Perform various duties to assess work practices and conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers.
Inspect work areas, conducts surveys, analyzes findings and prepares reports.
Perform sampling using standard methods to establish the nature and degree of hazards and industrial products.
Conduct surveys and investigations of work operations, identifying and evaluating conditions which may be hazardous to the health or workers.
Perform respirator fit testing per appropriate standards and guidelines.
Calibrate industrial hygiene equipment, checking for compliance with existing calibration schedules.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must possess a valid civilian and/or military driver?s license.
- A physical examination is required.
- Incumbent may spend up to 10% of the time in travel or TDY status.
- This is a drug testing designated position, requiring pre-employment and random drug abuse screenings.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- Incumbent shall not wear a beard in order to have proper fitting of respirator.
- Position requires moderate to heavy lifting. Must be able to lift up to 45 lbs.
- Required to be screened for applicable immunizations, based on occupational risk, and are subject to missing/required immunizations in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- Per Army Public Health Center (APHC), DOEHRS-IH is mandatory for all GS-0640 and GS-0690 Industrial Hygiene Staff Members. Certification must be obtained within a year from hire date (classes offered twice a year).
- Will be required to be on-call to support mission requirements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing environmental health functions such as conducting surveys, assessing environmental conditions to identify health and safety hazards; and utilizing industrial hygiene equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-8).

Education: Two years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Safety, Physics, Engineering, Biological Science, Physical Science or Environmental Hazards. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
