The Security Assistant will carry out support tasks related to VHA Police / Public Safety Enforcement and Security Administration and Operations. Monitors security systems, video surveillance, radio, telephone, and other emergency communication circuits. Dispatches police, fire, medical or other emergency services. Enters, updates and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases. Maintain reports and logs.
Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to:
Implements policies, procedures and methods of identifying and protecting personnel, property, and sensitive material.
Prepare and submits after action reports with findings and recommendations to supervisors for review.
Receives, monitors and processes routine/emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services.
Coordinates with various Federal, State and local law enforcement officials to coordinate emergency situations.
Determines the nature and location of emergency and uses sound judgment to prioritize events.
Monitors direct emergency alarms, surveillance system, computer databases and emergency weather alerts.
Assist employees with Personnel Identification Verification PIV / Badge issues.
Provides quality customer service, upon request from VHA employees and to the public as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Varying 12 hour shifts.

Physical Requirements: The work is typically sedentary in nature. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; or driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Working on off-tours, rotating shifts or regular overtime may be required along with being assigned to various locations within the area of responsibility as required.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: knowledge of security or law enforcement objectives and programs; carrying out support tasks related to law enforcement and security administration; monitoring and/or responding to physical alarm systems and security cameras; emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services, and directs response to security and life safety communications, radio dispatching, telephone, video monitoring systems and other emergency communication circuits. Determines the nature and location of the emergency; uses own judgment to prioritize events and commit police resources appropriately; determines what notifications are necessary based upon event type, coordinates follow-up communications. Dispatching officers; monitoring computers for video surveillance; Enters, updates and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases, and maintaining reports and logs.

Education
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
