This is a TEMPORARY, INTERMITTENT position not to exceed 1 year in the Office of the Executive Director for the Regional Bureau of African Affairs (AF). The Secretary provides a full range of secretarial and administrative support. AF focuses on the development and management of U.S. policy concerning the African continent.
Duties
Review work for proper content, attachments, signatures, clearances and conformance to agency procedures, and grammatical aspects to ensure the delivery of effective and responsive services.
Develop correspondence guidelines and procedures for staff, prepare and present periodic training sessions on new office management policies and procedures, and train staff in their application.
Prepare, plan, and coordinate domestic and foreign travel authorizations, reservations and vouchers in accordance with the Federal travel regulations, policies and procedures.
Review all outgoing correspondence for compliance with established policy, format, completeness, and clarity.
Utilize discretion and judgment in screening and prioritizing calls and based on assessments of the nature and purpose of calls, directs calls to appropriate staff members for response
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Incumbent will be subject to random drug testing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
- Must be able to type 40 words per minute.
- Medical clearance is required.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all the required qualification requirements described below by the closing date of this announcement. NOTE: Applicants must meet time-in-grade and time after competitive appointment requirements, by the closing date of this announcement. Time-In-Grade Requirements: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions, per 5CFR 300, Subpart F.
Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of this position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying administrative principles and practices to recommend changes in office procedures and improve efficiency.
Experience interpreting and applying travel regulations as they pertain to domestic and overseas travel.
Experience working with high-ranking officials; scheduling meetings, travel and related activities.
Experience analyzing and evaluating correspondence of a critical, confidential, or sensitive nature.
