The Urgent Care Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients and families in a nursing care unit/area. He/she is accountable for adhering to established policies standards of care and standards of practice. The incumbent reports directly to the Urgent Care Nurse Manager of the patient care unit/area. The staff nurse functions as team leader and charge nurse as assigned under the supervision of the Urgent Care Nurse Manager or designee.
Duties
Major duties:
He/she provides direct supervision of nursing personnel in their defined area of responsibility
and evaluates their performance and competency.
The incumbent is knowledgeable concerning the disciplinary process and keeps his/her supervisor abreast of such actions.
She/he is responsible for all issues that affect nursing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, functional statement, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols and competencies.
He/she ensures appropriate orientation, education and continuing professional development of nursing personnel supervised.
She/he assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling of permanent and supplemental nursing staff and ensures that assignments of the staff reflect their appropriate utilization, compliance
with staffing guidelines, and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards.
She/he is fiscally responsible and participates with the ACN/MC in planning and monitoring the budget for his/her area of responsibility.
He/she allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective, and customer focused nursing care.
The incumbent serves as a role model and coaches and supports staff in critical thinking regarding professional nursing practice.
He/she fosters an atmosphere conducive to educational experiences for nursing and other students.
She/he facilitates an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration and collegial relationships.
He/she promotes peer review.
She/he is responsible for ensuring an environment that is conducive to the recruitment and retention of highly competent nursing staff with diverse backgrounds.
He/she directs practice according to established policies, standards of care, and
standards of practice, and is responsible to ensure that nursing practice and operations are
compliant with all applicable local, VISN, or National standards, policies, statutes and
regulations.
He/she ensures that nursing practice is consistent with external standards such as TJC and internal standards such as the VA Performance Measures (PM).
She/he is an active member of the Clinical Management Team.
He/she plays a key role in the ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of the quality and effectiveness of nursing care and services as they affect patient outcomes.
She/he works closely with the CNAC in facilitating nursing research and involving staff in evaluative research activities within the designated area of responsibility.
The incumbent provides guidance and direction to the performance improvement process.
The Urgent Care Registered Nurse is competent in the following areas:
Cardiac/Vital Sign Monitors
Use/interpretation of EKG monitor/results
Proper Aseptic technique for IV placement, maintenance, and removal
proficient with IV infusion pumps
Proper use/documentation of glucometer including interpretation of results
Proper use and documentation of I-Stat
Catheter placement and maintenance
Proficient is use of Doppler ultrasound machine and bladder scanner
Picc Line care and documentation
Port-a-cath insertion, maintenance and removal
Blood transfusion and documentation
1/0 placement/removal, maintenance and documentation
Cardiac rhythm interpretation and documentation
Administration of IV drips, documentation and maintenance
Triage
Takes a leadership role in utilizing problem-solving methodologies to resolve system
and/or process problems that impact on patient care or staff performance at the unit/team
level.
Demonstrates role modeling, leadership and advanced clinical expertise to improve the
delivery of patient care through the use of the nursing process for patients requiring
specialized/complex care.
Develops creative, innovative strategies to resolve problems and/or promote positive
outcomes in collaboration with nursing/medical center leaders.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Ambulatory Care experience.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be also required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to done protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift.
