About the Position: This position is located within Defense Health Agency Region Indo-Pacific within Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) Department of Clinical Support in Schofield Barracks or Honolulu, Hawaii.

Duties
Serve as a practical nurse in one of several areas of a Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).
Prepare and administer prescribed medications by oral, topical, intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular routes; administers prescribed oxygen and respiratory therapy treatments.
Prepare patients for and administers medications or immunizations and monitors them afterwards for signs of complication or reaction.
Assist physicians during diagnostic, therapeutic and/or minor surgical procedures by preparing necessary supplies and equipment.
Maintain adequate supplies in patient care areas, labels specimen, completes laboratory requests, obtains patient records, retrieves x-ray and laboratory reports.
Provide written and verbal reports regarding patient's care for inclusion in the patient's medical record; such as height, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturation level, pain level, neck circumference.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
- Must obtain and maintain Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or the Military Training Network.
- This position requires screening for required immunizations and for evidence of tuberculosis.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) may be required.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Basic Requirement for a Practical Nurse:
Licensure: A current license to practice as a practical/vocational nurse in a State or territory of the United States or District of Columbia OR must have applied for a license to practice. Applications of candidates possessing a license must be accompanied by a certified or photostatic copy of the license. Non-licensed candidates who have completed their training may be appointed subject to obtaining the required license during the probationary period. Those not licensed must furnish the date on which they applied for a license and the jurisdiction involved. No person appointed pending licensure may be retained beyond the probationary period if licensure has not been attained.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Experience: One year of nursing experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures, performing such duties as 1) Measuring patient's vital signs; 2) Administering immunizations or medications via various routes; 3) Screening or updating patient medical records; and 4) Performing routine procedures such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), pulmonary function tests, wound care, audiograms and vision screenings. This definition of nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
