Duties

To serve as the Director of Sport Psychology services, mental health performance advisor, and liaison for the USAFA Athletic Department. Serves as the Athletic Department Sport Psychologist, consultant, and resource to all staff members supporting the AD mission with the goal of building resiliency, enhancing human performance, and improving unit mission effectiveness. Serves as subject matter expert (SME) and consultant on Sports Psychology matters for AD leadership, the Mountain West Conference (MWC), other conference affiliates, athletic coaches, and cadet-athletes, ensuring all Sports and Performance Psychology services provided throughout USAFA/AD meet or exceed the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association of Applied Sports Psychology (AASP) standards and ethics. Provides education, training, consultation, and counseling for cadet athletes for cadet athletes and coaching staff with a limited scope of psychological problems (mild/transient diagnoses and adjustment difficulties). Delivers crisis intervention to individuals with complex behavioral health conditions and refers individuals with complex and severe mental health issues to the installation Mental Health Clinic or other appropriate Medical Facility. Utilizes information gathered by direct observations, client interactions, and treatment, as well as interviews with teams to select or develop evidence-based initiatives to mitigate identified hazards and barriers to optimal health and performance, and to enhance resiliency. Collaborates with senior AD leadership, Human Performance Laboratory staff, athletic trainers, sports medicine, and strength and conditioning coaches in selecting, developing, and/or executing risk-mitigation and performance-enhancement strategies. Conducts thorough individual and team assessments and provides evidenced-based services to optimize comprehensive cadet-athlete and team performance.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirement is a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited university or professional school. Must have completed an APA accredited pre-doctoral internship in professional psychology (1 year internship is part of an APA accredited doctoral program). Licensed or license-eligible in the State of Colorado. Must demonstrate education, training, and practice with specific focus in Applied Sports and Performance Psychology. Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) or near completion. Minimum 4 years of experience as a fully qualified clinical psychologist and demonstrate a minimum of 2 years experience in Applied Sports or Operational Psychology practice and proficiency working with high performing military, collegiate, olympic and/or professional athlete populations. Must meet or exceed the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) standards and ethics. ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES: Sports Psychology, doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will be those that have 4 or more years of specialization, demonstrated experience, and proficiency working with military, collegiate and/or professional athlete populations in the field of Sports and Performance Psychology. Prior experience working with athletes in an NCAA athletics environment. Working knowledge of Department of Defense and service level regulations and guidelines governing mental health services for military members is desired. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of ethical issues in mental performance consultation and adheres to the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and American Psychological Association (if applicable) code(s) of ethics. Proficiency in addressing all aspects of students' intersecting identities within the context of psychotherapy. Ability to provide supervision to psychologists-in-training. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to problem-solve, handle sensitive information and nuanced situations. Ability to triage and provide appropriate referrals to other community behavioral health providers and services. Skilled in needs assessment and establishment of agreed upon outcomes with clients and ability to adapt individualized interventions to athletes and coaches of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Demonstrated skills in concussion recovery as it relates to the impact on mental health. Ability to provide group trainings and presentations to student athletes and staff on mental health and performance topics. Demonstrated willingness and capacity to develop strong relationships with players and coaches. Knowledge/experience with Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Positive Psychology, and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. Leadership experience in curriculum development and academic assessment is desired. Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated service to educational institutions and the discipline commensurate with years in the discipline.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the educational requirements.
