About the Position: This position is located in Facilities Department, Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune North Carolina. The incumbent serves as a maintenance worker performing repairs and maintenance in the trade areas of carpentry, painting, and gardening. Many of the repairs performed by this position will require using a combination of the assigned trade areas. The duties will be performed in the maintenance and upkeep of facilities at Camp Lejeune North Carolina and associated facilities.

Duties

Evaluate weather conditions, degree of moisture in the soil, and stage of plant growth for planning seasonal projects. Maintain care of lawns, flowers, shrubs and trees for proper growth. Install materials with regard to lengths, dimensions, and space requirements. Construct a variety of fixtures using sheetrock, plywood, rafters, joists, and/or flooring when necessary. Utilize power and hand tools such as hammers, hand saws, drills, and/or nail guns to complete tasks. Apply coating materials such as paint, varnish, and/or primer on properly prepared surfaces.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to complete a hepatitis screening and/or undergo tuberculosis testing.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has been designated Weather Essential. In the event of inclement weather conditions, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • This position requires the incumbent be fit tested for personal protective equipment (PPE).

I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex gardening and maintenance duties including planting, pruning, fertilizing, and transplanting a variety of plants, grasses, trees, and shrubs. I am skilled in performing repairs, installation, and maintenance on many types of fixtures including drywall, sheetrock, joists, shelving, frame structures, and/or insulating materials. I can prepare surfaces for coating materials and apply paint, primer, varnishes, and shellac; I use spray guns, rollers, and/or brushes to apply coating materials. I can read blueprints, utilize hand and power tools, and read instructions to complete work. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Strenuous physical exertion is often required. Employee may lift and move materials up to 65 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Employee may work from ladders, scaffolding, and roofs performing the duties of this position. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both inside and outside. Employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels, sawdust, fumes, and hazards associated with hand and other power tools. Work will also expose employee to adverse weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. Employee is subject to cuts, bruises and contusions. May be required to work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics, which may be dusty and dirty. Protective devices such as, but not limited to, ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat and safety shoes may be required. Protective equipment and clothing may be hot and uncomfortable and worn for long periods.
