This position is open to current full-time, permanent employees of the Environmental Management Service line at the VA Providence Healthcare system only.

Duties

As a Sewing Machine Operator, the incumbent is responsible for the repair and alteration to all linens, protective clothing and Government-owned uniforms used in the medical center. The objective is to keep linens and uniforms in circulation by making proper alterations and repairs, also to avoid the cost of new items when repairs and alterations can be made economically. Duties include, but are not limited to: Duties are not those of design and fabrication, only of alteration and repair; Notify immediate supervisor when seamstress supplies are in need of replenishment; Utilize, as required, a double heat element patching unit for repairing holes and small tears; Clean, oil and adjust the various machines used, and keep the working area as neat as possible; Required to operate a medium heavy-duty, industrial-type, sewing machine and hand tools such as shears, scissors, grommet tools and metal snap fasteners; Observe the general rules of safety when performing seamstress duties and also observe any special rules of safety that may apply to all equipment utilized in the performance of duties; and, Some minor fabrication of simple items, such as covers for linen carts, may be necessary from time to time. Work Schedule: Full-time. Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System: Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) [formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)] must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System. Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment. Veterans' preference does not apply for internal or other current permanent Federal agency employees. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is a LIUNA Bargaining Unit position.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The various assigned duties sometimes require sitting, standing or bending for lengthy periods. The ability to lift stacks of linen weighing 20 pounds is required. Vision must be adequate to sew, inspect and de-lint linens for lengthy periods.
