This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates.
A student loan repayment incentive may be authorized.
About the Position: Serves as Physician at a Military Entrance Processing Station. Performs tasks involved in medically qualifying applicants for Armed Forces enlistment, re-enlistment. performs physicals for commissioning and entry into officer training programs.
Duties
Review patient medical records, perform detailed medical histories and physicals, and evaluate labs to determine military suitability.
Assess the applicant's mental and physical health fitness for service in the military.
Complete all computer and non-computer based medical documentation in accordance with current United States Military Entrance Processing Command (USMEPCOM) software packages and policies.
Advise the MEPS Commander on professional and medical technical aspects of conducting the MEPS medical examination program.
Evaluates the content of the history which may extend beyond the standardized form of medical questions for appropriate evaluation.
Requirements
- Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation.
- Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, applicants must have had, and completed 1 year of supervised experiences providing direct service in a clinical setting.
- Licensure: Must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- Prior to a final job offer, applicants must have required credentials reviewed and initial medical services appointment made by the Headquarters, United States Military Entrance Processing Command.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Advanced certification (e.g., Advanced Life Support) does not supersede BLS completion.
- May be designated as the Chief Medical Officer during short absences.
- Must maintain all regulatory required certifications/licenses.
- May require up to 25% temporary duty travel to other MEPS to cover staffing shortages.
- Credentials: The Physician, Chief Medical Officer, Assistant Medical Officer must maintain an active, unrestricted, state medical license at all times, which includes completion of CME credits as mandated by individual states.
- Must be familiar with computer peripherals and associated software as needed to accomplish the mission.
- Occasionally may be required to work on Saturdays; and/or shift work (work before 0600 or after 1800 hours).
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.
- This position requires the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.
- Must use restrictive and protective clothing such as surgical gloves; cannot wear exposing footwear.
- This position has a screening immunization requirement for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4
Qualifications
Important:
A student loan repayment incentive may be authorized for this position. Eligible employees may receive up to an annual limitation of $10,000 each calendar year, and an aggregate limitation of $60,000 per employee. Eligibility is subject to the requirements of the Army Student Loan Repayment Program.

Basic Requirement for Physician:
Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States
Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Experience/Training: Applicants must possess 2 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
