The Carpenter position works with the Carpentry Shop, in the Maintenance Division of Facilities Engineering Services at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center (MVAMC).

Duties

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to: Construction, alteration, repair or modification of items and structures such as framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior trim, staircases, trusses and beams, where accuracy, spacing, and fit are essential and structural soundness or appearance are important. Plans and completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation. Measuring, cutting and constructing or repairing wood or wood substitute items such as scaffolds, staging parts, panels, bins, pallets, concrete forms, dry wall, sheathing and roof decking. Planning and layout work is difficult at this grade because instructions may not be specific. Carpenter does preventive maintenance work and inspection of buildings, inspecting doors, window, walls, floors, and ceilings. Repairs adjusts, or replaces worn, damaged, or missing items. Records all material used, reports major maintenance repairs needed and building condition to supervisor. Makes reports of obvious electrical and plumbing repairs needed. Carpenters are required to us their own initiative and work with minimum supervision. *** This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires considerable walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching and working overhead for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to lift and move heavy equipment repeatedly often exceeding 50 pounds of weight when working with such items as lumber, sheet rock, scaffolding, equipment, doors, steel frames, etc. Working Conditions - Work is performed inside and outside of buildings where the employee is subjected to extreme heat and cold weather conditions. Work areas may become dusty, dirty, smelly, with minimal lighting and ventilation. Work may be performed In tight spaces, unusual positions, on scaffolding and high ladders or rooftops. The employee is subject to possible injury from working with power tools, hand tools that are common and uncommon equipment they may or may not be familiar with in the carpentry trade. Incumbent must always be very safety conscious.
