This position is in the Engineering Maintenance Department of the Texas Valley Coastal Bend (TXVCBVAHCS) VA Health Care System, Harlingen, Texas. The incumbent is responsible for routine and emergency maintenance and repair as well as directing and ensuring the quality of the work of subordinate staff.
Duties
Major Duties:
Serves as technical, working, and administrative supervisor over Maintenance Workers in Engineering Services. Exercises full supervisory responsibility over work operations involving maintenance, repair, modification, renovation, and new construction of various building components.
Provides general instructions, standard procedures, overall priorities, and policies, and relies on controls work operations to accomplish an adequate quantity and quality of work. Reviews work for efficient and economical accomplishment with priorities.
Advises employees of performance expectations and explains new work techniques, as required. Provides proper guidance and direction, continuous feedback on strengths and weaknesses.
Recommends restructuring positions when necessary to achieve the most effective and economical utilization of personnel.
Recommends training based on needs assessment and mission requirements. Maintains work reports and records relating to section, e.g., progress, production, cost, personnel, equipment, materials, and time and attendance.
Assists supervisors in planning overall leave schedule.
Performs Contracting Officer Representative (COR) Duties.
Participates with employees in the development of performance plans and recommends them to supervisors.
Assigns work to individuals and provides technical direction and/or help in accomplishing difficult work steps and processes. Observes work in progress to anticipate and resolve problems, reassign personnel within group supervised, and coordinates work among workers and other supervisors to maintain work progress to meet schedules. Inspects completed work for quality and work order requirements. Reports possible or actual work delays to superiors.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday (Alternate schedule may be necessary to meet the needs of the organization)

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physically, the Maintenance Supervisor is expected to be able to meet the following functional requirements: light lifting (15 pounds); light carrying (15 pounds); and walking (3 hours)
