The position is located under Environmental Service (EMS)/Pest Control Section, under the supervisor of the Chief of Environmental Management Service (EMS). Incumbent serves as a Pest Controller for the facility and is responsible for completing all pest management activities independently, and will be required to maintain the proper licenses associated with the position.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES
Planning, Identification & Monitoring Routinely plans, conducts, and responds to requests for inspections within the facility for infestations of
common pests, such as: cockroaches, bees, wasps, weevils, beetles including carpet beetles, ants stable
flies, blow flies, house flies; predatory insects such as mosquitos, lice, bedbugs, fleas, mites, ticks,
centipedes, scorpions; rodents, birds, and wood-destroying organisms such as termites, carpenter ants,
carpenter bees, etc.
Completes reports of surveys, treatments, and infestations, and briefs Chief of Environmental Management
Service when needed.
If infestation is found, the incumbent plans and organizes the needed treatment schedule, and the equipment
required. Develops survey and preventative treatment schedules, selects equipment and materials needed,
and notifies selected areas. Coordinates with other functions within and outside the branch when treatment
may impact the efficiency or health standards of the area needing treatment.
Train medical center employees in Pest Prevention and pest monitoring, as well as emergency contingency
plans as necessary. Stays current on federal, state and local pest control regulations and technology.
Advises the Chief of Environmental Management Service when new or existing regulations impact the
capabilities of the position. Incumbent is the facilities pest management expert and advises management
and support personnel on all aspects relative to monitoring and maintaining an effective and safe integrated
pest management program.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Physical Requirements: Work assignments require moderate to strenuous effort. The incumbent must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand on concrete or metal surfaces; work in confined spaces for prolonged periods; and frequently lift parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds with the aid of mechanical lifting devices or assistance from other workers.
Working Conditions: The work is accomplished both inside and outside. When working outside, the incumbent is exposed to hot sun for extended periods of time and occasionally to bad weather. Inside work is often accomplished in structural areas with minimum ventilation and/or limited access. The incumbent mixes substances and applies pesticides while wearing respirators, gloves, and other personal protective equipment designed to nullify the risk of exposure to toxic dust and sprays which might damage his/her health. Damage to health may occur if appropriate safety procedures are not followed. Discomfort may be experienced while wearing protective clothing, respirators, goggles, or face masks for extended periods of time. The incumbent may be exposed to poisonous insects, reptiles, and plants and to wild and rabid animals.
