The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), under the employing office Durham VA Medical Center (VAMC), Engineering Service. The primary purpose of this position is to transport patients from surrounding areas to the Durham VA Medical Center.
**Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license active Class "C" with "P" endorsement CDL.
Duties
Incumbent is required to operate a 10 to 15 passenger van with a gross vehicle weight over 10,000 pounds to transport veterans on a regular and recurring basis to the VA Medical Center and other locations within the surrounding areas. The van is equipped with specialized equipment and the incumbent is responsible for knowledge of their operating procedures. The specialized features are: (1) a two-way mobile unit and (2) a handicapped rear-mounted electronic wheelchair lift. For maximum safety of patients, incumbent must insure that wheelchairs are locked in place, secured and positioned properly.
Incumbent will operate vehicles over Federal, state, and county roads and city streets in all traffic conditions.
Incumbent will assist veterans in and out of the vehicle, observing necessary safety and lifting techniques as appropriate.
Incumbent ensures the safety and comfort of the veterans during the time the veteran is en route to destination and/or return to origination point.
Incumbent is responsible for taking vehicle for routine maintenance and/or repairs as necessary. Incumbent may be required to provide emergency transport of critical personnel during extremes of inclement weather.
Maintains a daily logbook indicating the mileage, time and date of arrivals and departure between the VA Medical Center and dispatched points.
Incumbent drives and performs operator's maintenance of sedans, station wagons, minivans, passenger vans, and patient transport vehicles with gross vehicle weight not to exceed 26000 pounds.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The daily duties performed by incumbent consists; of climbing in and out of vehicles, moderate to heavy physical effort when loading and unloading patients, and driving long hours. Incumbent must be physically sound and have good coordination of eyes, hands, feet, and vision and depth perception. Incumbent must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.
Incumbent operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Incumbent may be exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving. Incumbent
may also be exposed to patients with all types of diseases, viruses, etc.
