The incumbent serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic and is assigned to the Maintenance and Repair Section at the NY Harbor VAMC in Brooklyn, Manhattan or St. Albans locations. They will install, maintain and repair equipment, used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including humidifying equipment and high volume air exhaust, and supply systems in the station and district, laundry, buildings and grounds.
Duties
This position maintains and repairs, modifies, troubleshoots, installs and operates all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems for the Brooklyn, St. Albans or Manhattan VAMC. This includes all air handling units, air conditioning compressors, chill water pumps, condensing water pumps, heating water pumps, cooling towers, ice machines, heat convertors, fume hoods, variable frequency drives, and associated pneumatic and electric control systems.
Major Duties include but are not limited to:
The work involves installing, recognizing the cause of faulty equipment, and making repairs on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems such as walk-in and reach-in coolers, refrigerators, ice cream cabinets, deep freezers, attic and evaporative fans, and other equipment of comparable complexity including large systems for heating, cooling, humidifying and dehumidifying.
Installs and repairs systems to condition the air for different kinds of structures including those areas that have special requirements such as communication centers, data processing centers, operating rooms, laboratories, intensive care units and other areas with sensitive equipment.
The systems use a variety of methods of air conditioning and refrigeration such as mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption and multiple compressor systems.
Performs all mechanical and electrical work required to maintain, repair, service and recognize the cause of faulty equipment relating to refrigeration and air handling equipment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Continuous stooping, kneeling, lifting, climbing, bending and reaching is done in the course of a days work which results in prolonged muscular exertion. The incumbent is required to handle objects and materials weighing in excess of 40 pounds. Operation of all power tools requires alert and skillful handling.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
