The incumbent will be responsible for the oversight and supervision of nursing personnel in the Behavioral Mitigation Intervention Team. You are responsible for applying the nursing process to systems and processes at the unit, team, and at work group level to improve care. They will assume accountability for the operation of designated areas of responsibility. This includes the supervision and evaluation of care delivered by nursing and other allied health care staff.
Duties
As the registered nurse, the incumbent is responsible for contributing to the establishment and implementation of evidenced-based nursing standards of quality and practice. They will serve as a role model in the delivery of comprehensive patient, family care, and the resolution of issues. The RN in this role will work primarily in conjunction with interdisciplinary teams to assist in assessment, mitigation plans, and care plan of disruptive behaviors displayed by Veterans with neurocognitive disorders and dementia who are admitted to the inpatient acute care wards. This individual works closely with the Behavioral Health LIP and unit staff in developing a nursing care plan with goals to assist in the reduction of these behaviors, provide oversight of care plan executed by BMIT team, and re-evaluation of goals. This position will require experience and knowledge of assessing for behaviors and de-escalation techniques for patients with disruptive behaviors. This position will be considered the Subject Matter Expert and assist in Code Greens in de-escalating situations and provided education/guidance to front line staff. This individual will directly report to the Workplace Violence Coordination under the direction of the Social Work Chief.
The incumbent is responsible for the following duties/responsibilities:
Knowledge and ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice, while using sound clinical judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating nursing care, based on the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice and alignment with the Joint Commission Standards/VHA Directives.
Develops a nursing care plan with interventions and goals to assist Veterans in curbing unwanted dangerous or disruptive behavior and providing a more therapeutic milieu based on consults received to the BMIT Team.
Provides oversight and re-evaluation of the execution of BH nursing care plan by the BHIT nursing team. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team on progress of care plan and communicates any concerns.
Serves as a nursing consultant to interdisciplinary staff on acute care units on methods of mitigating problematic behaviors and creating a supportive environment for Veterans exhibiting these behaviors. Provides education and training to staff about strategies to reduce and mitigate risk.
Serves part of the Code Green Team that responds to Inpatient Medical/Surgical units only.
This individual assists in de-escalation techniques, assist with physical holds, provide guidance to acute care staff, and reduces risk of undue harm to patients in these scenarios.
Prevention Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB) instructor and works towards Master Trainer within 3 years.
Prepares nursing schedules and reports in a timely manner, and monitor staffing patterns with time and attendance, taking corrective action as needed.
Oversee new employee orientation, monitors progress, and ensures completion of the employee competencies. Lead and delegate group activities to solve problems or accomplish a specific task. Teaches, coaches, and facilitates educational and learning opportunities to your employees.
Participates in committee assignments, as deemed necessary by the service manager.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

MSN prepared or higher
Minimum of 3 years experience in Acute Care with adult population
Minimum of 1-year experience in inpatient Long-Term care leadership and
management

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
