The full performance, Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Generalist is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This position serves as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as; primary care, mental health, and specialty clinics. As an ICT Generalist the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (cboc), mobile medical unit or may have virtual/remote assignments.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Intermediate Care Technicians (ICT) are expected to communicate with their supervising physicians, licensed independent provider (LIP), and advanced practice provider (APP) to provide collaborative, timely and appropriate patient care. Incumbent assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations within the critical care setting. This can include assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, assisting with observation and documentation of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients by providing one-to-one observations and applying Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB) Techniques. Incumbent will maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient while promoting a sense of worth and dignity under the supervision of licensed personnel. Diagnostic and POC (Point of Care) studies, Examples: I-STAT, glucometer, bedside ultrasound, vital sign, EKGs. Equipment and procedural set up. Examples: chest tube insertion, assisting with placement of central venous access devices (CVAD) Observations and interventions. Examples: oxygen therapy, thermal regulation, ambulation, oral/trach care. Patient transport as secondary assistant. Examples: with or without cardiac monitoring and/or ventilation to and from diagnostic tests and/or transfers of patients. Knowledge of equipment terminology, and skill to identify and use equipment and supplies properly and to communicate proper use with nurses medical staff, patients and family members. Knowledge enough to understand the legal/ethical considerations of critical care. e.g., actual/implied consent, patient right, advanced directives, etc. to limit exposure to lawsuits, while maintaining the legal/ethical standards of care. Knowledge of protocol-approved list of medications (their uses, doses, side effects, adverse effects and toxicity signs) to competently administer drugs per order or policy. Knowledge of proper dosages required in keeping with method of administration. Incumbent varies the order and sequence of procedures and practices and uses judgment in selecting the most appropriate application of the guidelines based on tour report, patient care/treatment plan, and the patient's medical history. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Intermediate Care Technician/PD99968A Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients. Must be able to carry objects over 40pounds for distances of at least 200 feet.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: performing patient screening; observing and communicating with patients and visitors; performing specimen collection; assisting with patient exams; performing vital signs and wound care. Note: Your experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week OR, Education: Have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education in a directly related field to the position of the Intermediate Care Technician, GS-7. One (1) full year of graduate education is defined 18 semester hours in courses that are directly related to the work of this position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Note: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR, Combination: Have equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position. Experience must be detailed within your resume. (Transcripts Required) To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
