The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Air Combat Command (ACC) Archivist; to develop plans and establish professional archival policy, procedures, and programs for the command history office and subordinate field history offices.

Duties

Performs advanced professional archival research and reference services. As the command's only professionally certified archivist, responsible for all aspects of the ACC archive (classified and unclassified) and uses subject area expertise to create and manage policy, guidelines, and development of ACC archives as they pertain to archival custody, preservation, management, and access. Disseminates, digitizes, and preserves historical information through sound archival management: Maintains the command archive containing classified and unclassified material. Performs a variety of duties in History, research and reference services. Answers requests for historical information requiring complex research in multiple sources. Carries out special assignments. Performing archival conservation and preservation work on the historic collections at the Command; researching regulatory and policy issues, analyzing data, developing briefing slides, and oral reports to supervisor or higher graded specialists, etc.

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. (con't)

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-1420, Archivist Series. Basic Requirements: Bachelor's degree in archival science or Bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts OR: Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts AND: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of the arrangement, content, and servicing of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures used to access them. Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures. Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes, and other archival materials. A working knowledge of protection methods used for historical documents. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-?grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of the arrangement, content, and servicing of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures used to access them. Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures. Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes, and other archival materials. A working knowledge of protection methods used for historical documents. Skill in organizing information in a logical and easily understood manner for use by researchers. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to work with a wide variety of professional and senior personnel in an area requiring sensitivity and tact. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
