About the Position: This position is located in the Department of Behavioral Health, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Duties

Serve as Recreation Therapist in support of Department of Behavioral Medicine Programs. Coordinate therapeutic recreation services for patients assigned to the treatment ward. Utilize standard assessment tools and / or develops specific tools to determine functional assessments. Analyze recreational activities in order to realize the individual's treatment goals.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • Position requires Immunization screening.
  • Required to be on call, work weekends, work evenings and work at different locations within the Department of Behavioral Medicine.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 25 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Recreation Specialist: Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements: A. Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in therapeutic recreation, art therapy, drama therapy, dance therapy, or music therapy; OR Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in a related field involving therapeutic emphasis or concentration that included at least 36 semester hours in therapeutic courses as described below: 18 semester hours of therapeutic recreation courses; and 18 semester hours that include a combination of abnormal psychology, physiology, human anatomy and development, disabilities and general recreation Education must have been obtained from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes planning, directing, and coordinating recreation-based treatment programs for substance abuse, disabilities, injuries, or illnesses. Maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; build confidence; and socialize effectively. Experience with substance abuse patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Customer ServicePlanning and EvaluatingProblem Solving Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
