The employee will serve as a Claims Assistant at the Iowa City VA Health Care System, in Iowa City, IA. The employee's primary duties are to help Veterans determine eligibility and entitlement for health care services in the VA system.
Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Interviews and counsels' patients applying for outpatient and inpatient medical care.
Assists patients with completion of the means test (financial assessment) process.
Provides information to applicants or inquirers regarding VA medical care eligibility and entitlement requirements.
Screens applicants for humanitarian emergencies, possible third party and workmen's compensation cases.
Reviews all lodging requests.
Processes admissions accurately and timely, determining bed availability according to policy and entering required information into the appropriate system.
Maintains an electronic log of patients reporting to the Patient Registration window requesting services.
Resolves problems and complaints involving procedural administrative issues.
Provides guidance to the medical staff regarding administrative procedures, legal eligibility and entitlement of applicants.
Adjusts workload assignments by coordinating with other co-workers in immediate work area.
Assists and processes long term care applications, hardship cases and/or other special cases.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm or 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: providing guidance to the medical staff regarding administrative procedures, legal eligibility and entitlement of applicants, procurement of prosthetic items, medications, travel availability or benefits and procurement of other support services; interviewing individuals applying for outpatient and inpatient medical care; assisting applicants with completion of administrative forms; and receiving and handling both in person and telephone contacts courteously and efficiently.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successful completion of (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
