This position is located within Environmental Management Service (EMS), at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, in Detroit, MI.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Applies thorough knowledge of pests including ants, flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, mice, rats, birds, termites, ticks, fleas, mites, bed bugs, etc. including their physical characteristics, life cycles, habits, reproduction patterns, and hiding areas within the facilities;
Maintains all program plans and records, are skilled in surveillance and trouble-shooting techniques, and can determine most pest control measures needed without benefit of professional or supervisory guidance;
Performs pest control duties independently;
Plans work to be completed, develop survey, inspection and treatment schedules and completes required reports and records operations, including chemicals used and areas treated;
Utilizes the most effective procedures available in controlling infestation or potential infestation;
Works harmoniously with an environmental sanitation program in maintaining an aseptically clean and aesthetically pleasant environment;
Completes administrative records which document the target pest treated, date of treatment, pesticides used, application methods, etc. and other applicable logs or records as required;
Keeps abreast of rapidly changing laws relating to chemical use, restrictions, and regulations, safety and preventive treatment requirements for storage and exposure to controlled or regulated products;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8:00AM - 4:30PM

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Overall duties require the incumbent to be in good physical condition. Duties require walking, stooping, lifting objects as heavy as 50 pounds, moving objects such as desks, chairs, floors polishing machines and battery-powered scrubbing machines, bending, and remaining on feet for long periods of time. Must be able to use both manual and power tools and equipment such as ultra low dosage hydraulic and hand sprayers, sub slab injectors, dusters, pneumatic roto-hammers, animal traps, and other devices. Work is normally performed in and out of doors where heat and light are may not be adequate but be dusty, dirty, greasy, or be infested with pests. Incumbent works in all areas where EMS has responsibilities, including isolation areas, and may be subject to cuts, bruises, punctures, minor shocks, or other injuries normally associated with tasks. Incumbent follows safety rules and regulations in daily work including mixing of solutions, climbing ladders, and operating power equipment and daily tasks.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS REQUIREMENT: If you are selected for the position of Pest Controller, you must currently have a federal/state pesticides license/certification for the following areas: public health, structural and ornamental insect, and disease control. DRIVER'S LICENSE: Applicants must possess a current, valid, unrestricted State driver's license. ABILITY TO DO THE WORK: Applicants must have the ability to do the work of a Pest Controller without more than normal supervision. Related experience includes identifying common pests by sight, physical characteristics, habits, hiding areas and independently determining appropriate pest measures; selecting and mixing approved pesticides and chemicals; applying pesticides in accordance with labeled instructions and warnings; and storing, handling and disposing of all pesticides and containers as required by all local, state, and federal regulations.
