About the Position: Serves as a Writer/Editor (Speechwriting) with the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) in Miami, Florida, providing focused support and operational and strategic research in support of the senior leadership's speaking engagements with high level senior US and foreign government officials, elected and appointed public officials, congressional staff, business, community and academic leaders.

Duties

Prepare leadership for speaking engagements with internal/external, foreign and/or domestic high-level customers/audiences. Apply technical writing and editing skills to incorporate historical and factual analysis of cultural, economic, and political issues to support decision-making. Provide timely advice and support to the senior leadership across a broad spectrum of subjects/issues, and policy considerations related to Latin America and the Caribbean to focus commander's time and efforts. Plan and develop content and engagement for SOUTHCOM's digital media platforms.

Requirements

  • Position has been designated Critical-Sensitive (3); incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) travel may be required up to 30% of the time.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Writing speeches, briefings, talking points, and/or oral/Congressional testimony so support senior leadership in speaking engagements/goals; and 2) writing/editing products that articulate, interpret, and/or explain a variety of subjects to specific audiences. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-12).
