About the Position: You will serve as a first year trainee in a formal program in power plant operation. The assignments, on-the-job training, and required course work are designed to qualify the employee for the next higher grade in the trainee program. Works under direct supervision of the power plant superintendent and senior operators has no authority to deviate from instructions or make decisions involving work assignments.

Duties

Consist of on-the-job training in operational and maintenance procedures throughout a hydroelectric power plant. Works with power plant operators in the performance of equipment operation maintenance and repair duties. Work all phases of power plant operation and maintenance of the electrical and mechanical equipment and their auxiliary systems and controls in the powerhouse, dam and switchyard. Apply basic hydropower plant trade practices sufficient to enable the incumbent to perform and train in the simple repetitive tasks of the trade such as replacing parts. test operation Comply with safety manuals, observing safety rules and, regulations, and instructions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment Physical is required. Position requires heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Pre-employment Drug Screening is required and may be subject to random drug screening. Required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • Require a valid State motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment and maintain the license for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical examination and be enrolled in the medical surveillance program that requires periodic physical examinations.
  • Must sign an Employment, Mobility, and Continued Service Agreement.
  • Trainee is responsible for completing lesson assignments and on-the-job training assignments on time. Works with experienced operations and maintenance personnel performing tasks as directed.
  • May be promoted to the next higher grade in the trainee program after satisfactory completion of required coursework, performance, appropriate time at grade level, and other regulatory requirements without further competition.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) POWER PLANT TRAINEE I without more than normal supervision. Duties Include; operation, servicing and maintenance of equipment in and ancillary hydroelectric power plant including routine preventive maintenance and checks, cleaning, painting, and similar services, and assisting with major electrical and mechanical overhauls. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Occasionally handles items greater than 50 pounds. Assistance is available with heavy items. Works in sitting, standing, walking. bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping positions, for extended periods if required. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is required to be performed both inside and outside and is subject to all extremes of weather. Incumbent is subjected to the danger of falls from scaffolds and slings, asbestos, carbon dust, fumes, electric shock, noise, moving machinery. close places in cramped positions. slippery conditions both water and grease. frequent travel, and other conditions expected from mechanical and electrical repair of power plant equipment. Incumbent is subject to abrasions, burns, cuts. and bruises common to the use of hand tools. Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Wearing of respirators, hard hats, hard toe footwear, gloves. goggles. face shields, rubber aprons, rainwear, and earplugs is mandatory in the performance of duties.

Education

The Hydropower Plant Trainee formal classroom training portion at Old Hickory Power Plant will last approximately 1 year, with formal on-the-job training lasting 2-3 additional years. After successfully completing the formal classroom portion of the Power Plant Trainee program, possible duty locations may be Barkley Power Plant, Kuttawa KY, Old Hickory Power Plant, Hendersonville TN or Old Hickory TN, and Cheatham Power Plant, Charlotte TN or Ashland City TN.
