The Kansas City VA Medical Center is seeking highly qualified Medical Instrument Technician Electrocardiograph (EKG) and Device Technician to work in our Cardiology Department located in our Medical Subspecialty Care Service (MSSC) Line.
Duties
This position resides within the Cardiology section of the Medical Subspecialty Care {MSSC) service line. The position reports to nurse manager of MSSC cardiology department. The technician operates equipment utilized in the recording of electrocardiograms, exercise stress tests and cardiac monitoring. The Technician operates and monitors EKG and cardiac monitoring equipment throughout the KCVA which includes the Community-Based Outreach Clinics. The technician utilizes the equipment to perform specialized cardiac testing involving cardiac stress testing and external ambulatory cardiac monitoring. The technician ensures all Veterans with implantable cardiac devices receive appropriate and timely remote and clinic follow up. The technician identifies arrhythmias and gross abnormalities as these abnormalities present, has a strong grasp of when to repeat certain tests, when to discontinue certain tests and when to seek the immediate attention of a physician. The technician evaluates test results to determine appropriate equipment adjustments and uses. The technician edits and selects an appropriate sample portion of the tracing for further interpretation by the physician, performs, analyzes and troubleshoots 12 lead electrocardiograms, scans and interpretations Holter and Event Monitor. Inputs and edits data utilizing the CPRS and MUSE systems and inputs data input into the stress testing console. The technician executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to managing complex systems.

Qualifications

Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:GS-7: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge Skills and Abilities: 1. Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias.2. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures.3. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue.4. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians.5. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation.
Preferred Experience: One year of cardiology, telemetry and/or mobile cardiac outpatient monitoring experience. Basic Life Support certification.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements if required as a condition of employment. Fluoroscopy is utilized in the Cardiac Cath Lab. The incumbent will be responsible to comply with all aspects of the fluoroscopy safety program.
