This position serves as the Regional Supervisory Audiologist in the Audiology Section of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Service at the French Camp/Stockton (Southern Region) clinics. The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the Regional Audiology Clinic sites and includes all clinical and patient care areas involved with the service.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: ADMINISTRATIVE: Assists in planning, assessing, and evaluating programs to ensure proper coordination between health care delivery within the section and the overall delivery of health care. Makes decisions with wide latitude of control and independent judgment. Exercises supervisory responsibilities such as planning and scheduling work, assigning work to employees, accepting, amending or rejecting completed work, assuring that production and accuracy requirements are met, appraising performance and recommending performance standards and ratings, assigning delineated clinical privileges, approving leave, and effecting disciplinary measures. Assists in training and orientation of new staff. Uses and shares knowledge of contemporary audiology practice. Articulates and communicates assignments, projects, problems to be solved, actionable events, and objectives, as well as advise on work methods, practices, and procedures. Uses ability to coach the clinical team in the selection and application of appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques. Shows potential to monitor and report on status and progress of work, evaluate program quality to ensure that methods, deadlines, and quality have been met; and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities. Assists in serving as facilitator and/or negotiator in coordinating initiatives and consensus building activities among clinical team members with wide divergent backgrounds, interest, and points of view CLINICAL: Conducts, plans, and coordinates clinical and administrative aspects of a full range of services associated with contemporary audiology practice. Audiology services include comprehensive hearing testing, hearing aid prescription and management, and Compensation and Pension hearing examinations. The incumbent is responsible for independent diagnostic assessment and evaluation of cases that are referred to the Audiology Section without limitation as to difficulty or complexity. The incumbent will be responsible to conduct interviews with the patients and appropriate family members or friends; and to select, administer and interpret the diagnostic test results necessary to detect and evaluate the presence of a hearing disorder. The incumbent is responsible for (1) assessing patient conditions from examination, observation and consultation with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team; (2) utilizing diagnostic and evaluative procedures and techniques consistent with contemporary audiology practice; (3) developing an appropriate plan of care and delivering treatment as designed and consistent with principles of evidence-based practice; (4) documenting evaluation and treatment actions and outcomes in appropriate formats in a timely manner, in accordance with facility policy, and completing all related patient care tasks; (5) reporting the findings to Veterans and their families, and to professional colleagues; (6) provides patient and family education including informed consent; and (7) optimizing clinical safety and efficiency by maintaining supplies, equipment in good working order. The incumbent serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases and is a recognized subject matter expert on matters related to audiology and hearing disorders. The incumbent will remain current with new developments in audiology and will maintain professional competency by reading professional journals and engaging in continuing education activities and professional learning experiences, and by communicating with other professionals in audiology and related professions. Professional interpersonal communication is required by this position and the incumbent will be expected to attend staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meetings as appropriate, review policies and procedures, and attend in-service training. The incumbent may participate in research activities pertinent to audiology. Although limited research is conducted in the clinical setting, the use of carefully executed procedures may be a part of a research design. The incumbent may be requested to assist in gathering clinical research data. The incumbent may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of the work is not substantial. Basic Requirements 1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. 2. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). 3. Education Requirement. The individual must meet at least one of the following requirements below: Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CAA is the only accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit entry-level audiology programs. HR office staff and management officials may verify the program accredited from CAA at www.caa.asha.org. OR Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the USDE. NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the CAA in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree or AuD programs in audiology.. 4. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria) Grade Determinations: Supervisory Audiologist, GS-13. Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level, GS-12, that fully meets the KSAs at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the following KSAs are required: Skill to evaluate programs to ensure efficient and appropriate integration of care. Ability to develop contingencies and align resources to achieve program goals. Ability to effectively interpret and apply facility, VISN and national audiology and speech pathology services policies. Ability to effectively create service-level policies and priorities to align with facility strategic plan. Ability to supervise professional staff. Grade Determinations: Supervisory Audiologist, GS-13. Preferred Experience: Minimum 5 years as a licensed audiologist, documented experience precepting/mentoring graduate students in audiology, documented experience in leadership and/or management role(s).
