You will serve as the Health Technician for the Outpatient Clinic (Primary Care Clinic, Surgical Specialty Clinic, CBOC), located in Soldotna, Alaska. You will assists medical and nursing staff through technical, specialized or support services for the diagnosing or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. As a Health Technician performing a variety of clinical, laboratory, and administrative work in support of outpatient services.
Duties
You will check vitals such as obtaining pulse oximetry included, processing reminders, reviewing and processing alerts appropriately, administering medication, participating in team huddles and meetings to manage and plan patient care.
You work with teams to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and entering appropriate information into the electronic record; monitoring pre appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure (e.g., X-ray, lab work).
You will participate in and independently following up on team huddles by sharing information and collaborating with the medical team to assure continuity of care.
You will evaluate patient information and clinic schedule lists to determine whether patient is vested.
You will perform bladder scans and perform an EKG.
You will assist providers with clinic visits, exams, and procedures (PAPs, sutures/staples, time-outs, wound cleansing, wound dressing).
You will administer medication, process clinical reminders, review and process alerts; provide education within scope of practice.
You will support VA mission and functions to include safety, quality, risk management, infection control, policies, staff meetings, and continuing education
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized Experience which must demonstrate: Performing medical or clinical assistant work (includes technician or health technician) within a clinical and laboratory environment; Administer subcutaneous and Intramuscular injections, and Immunizations/Vaccines/Ointments within scope of practice and training in a health care field. Examples of Specialized Experience for positions in the GS-0640 series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

EDUCATION (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one (1) year of graduate education that is directly related to the duties of the position. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. NOTE: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-05 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long-periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing and reaching over head. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
Work Environment: Work will be performed in a busy clinic environment subjecting the Health Technician to the risks associated with the clinic and hospital setting. The Health Technician may be exposed to contagious diseases and body fluids. It will be necessary for the technician to wear personal protective equipment and observe universal precautions when exposed to body fluids. Incumbent may be subject to verbal and physical outbursts from emotionally disturbed patients and distraught visitors. The position can be stressful at times due to the demands of the Veterans and position itself.
