Duties

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until 08/31/2023. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be 15 days from 08/10/2023, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st and 15th of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled. This open continuous announcement (OCA) job opportunity announcement (JOA) will be used to fill two (2) full-time and permanent Pharmacy Technician vacancies at the Lexington, KY Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) with Pharmacy Service. The duties of this position are performed in all areas of the Inpatient/Outpatient Pharmacy Department at the Lexington VA Health Care System in Lexington, Kentucky. The incumbent is a rotating, generalized pharmacy technician, who, under the authority of the Chief, Pharmacy Service, is directly involved in all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items. Duties include but are not limited to: Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form, determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label, and records required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order and in the ScriptPro and VISTA software when appropriate. After a final check by a pharmacist, prepares the medication for dispensing at the pick-up window or for mailing Compounds and/or re-constitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile). This includes calculating and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug solutions to be used. Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment to include ScriptPro Central, Omnicell, and Q-Matic automation Functions and maintains cyber-security in all software systems After prescription/orders are reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews orders for technical accuracy and notifies pharmacist of any discrepancies Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution process. Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention Assists in total quality improvement activities by participating in medical center and service process assessment and action teams and continually seeks to improve services Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces outdates on shelves and automated machines. Monitors inventory needs and relays this information to the appropriate pharmacy personnel. This also includes placing stock in proper storage areas, rotating stock on shelves and removing/replacing outdated items. Assists with inventory management and ordering of medications Works independently in the pharmacy mail area organizing labels, opening and sorting mail, scanning refill slips, filling and wrapping mail, and processing Fed-Ex packages when assigned Operates ScriptPro automated prescription filling system to process patient mediation orders Undertakes appropriate start-up procedures and assures system is accurately calibrated and standardized Utilizes inventory replacement scanner to verify canister refill accuracy Performs routine canister maintenance and calibration to assure all units are fully operational. Completes quality assurance checks according to procedure Trouble-shoots minor mechanical problems as they occur and coordinates resolution of more involved mechanical or software problems with ScriptPro Customer Service. Receives telephone calls from patients through the automated call distribution system Answers patient inquiries related to process questions, formulary versus nonformulary, availability of drugs, medications and supplies Provides patient education via telephone on the medication refill process, the use of the automated telephone system, My Heal the Vet, secure messaging and general information on the V AMC Lexington outpatient pharmacy hours of operation and other types of pharmacy services available Investigates and reports missing, or medications not received and determine how to resolve these problems Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts, As determined by the service Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English. Certification. Pharmacy Technicians in the VHA above the GS-05 grade level are required to have a certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Verify Certification (ptcb.org). In addition to the basic requirements, the below qualification requirements must be met at the grade in which you are applying. Grade Determinations: For the GS-06, Pharmacy Technician, you must have at least one year experience at the next lower grade and must fully meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) of the lower grade. The following are the KSAs of the Pharmacy Technician of the lower grade: Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems. In addition to the basic education and experience and at least one year experience at the lower grade that reflects meeting the lower grade KSAs, you must demonstrate the following GS-07 technical knowledge, skills, and abilities and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSA designated by an asterisk (*): Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. Physical Requirements: This position is mostly sedentary with sitting and entering data into the computer for prolonged periods of time. This position may also require walking, kneeling, bending, standing, and light lifting (lifting/carrying patient charts, office supplies, etc.).May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
