THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 5 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a AIR TRAFFIC ASSISTANT, Position Description Number T5796000 and is part of the CO 140 OSS, National Guard.

Duties

The primary purpose of this position is: To provide pilots a variety of critical information and assistance for planning and conducting a safe flight and to provide oversight for Flight Services and airfield operations during a shift of operation;To provide pilots pre-flight, enroute, and post-flight services similar to a Federal Aviation Service Station (FSS). Furnishes pilots with a full range of services pertinent to pre-flight planning. Reviews flight plans for accuracy and completeness, ensures accurate and timely input of flight plans into the National Airspace System (NAS). Provides en-route and post-flight information for all inbound aircraft; determines when aircraft are overdue and initiates search and rescue. Inspects and/or checks the airfield for flying safety hazards to include compliance with airfield criteria, aircraft foreign object damage and bird aircraft strike hazards. Responsible for the effective operation of flight data and airfield activities during the shift of duty. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Flight line driver's license and SECRET clearance required. Must obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance.
• Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
• This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
• The work may require irregular hours of work, rotating shifts and rest days, with periods of high stress.
• May be required to perform other duties in support of extended mission requirements based on the scope of the mission during times of conflict or staffing shortages.
• For positions requiring the operation for motor vehicle, candidates must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards, Individual Occupational Requirements for Air Traffic Assistance Series, 2154. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07. Examples of specialized experience includes: demonstrated knowledge of and skill in the use of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control procedures. Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in work such as: Civilian or military aircraft operations work, such as flight instructor, instrument rated pilot, flight engineer, or air transport pilot; FAA certified dispatcher for an air carrier; Flight information expediter involved in determining flight times of airplanes and transmitting information to flight operations and command centers; Civilian or military air traffic controller or Flight data processor. In addition, experience may include: knowledge of applicable DOD, FAA, and IACO air traffic system laws, rules, regulations, and procedures required for the safe conduct of flights within the NAS. Knowledge of air traffic system routes, capabilities and limitations of navigational aids, terrain topography, terminal instrument procedures, airspace restrictions and management, and local air traffic system procedures. Knowledge of aircraft flight characteristics configuration, which allows for appropriate response to in-flight and ground emergencies. Knowledge of airfield criteria, conditions and safety factors that provide a basis for imposing restrictions to aircraft operations and issuance of NOTAMs. Knowledge of applicable DoD, USAF, and FAA regulatory safety guidance affecting motor vehicles and aircraft movements on the airfield. OR Training: Successful completion of an FAA or military air traffic control training program. OR Possession of an FAA Control Tower Operator certificate.

Education

Education cannot be substituted for Specialized Experience for this position.
