The Industrial Hygienist coordinates and manages the industrial hygiene program for the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAHHCS).
Duties
Some duties may include:
Participates in development of hazardous materials and waste management program
Compiles documentation and maintains reports required by various regulatory agencies related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste disposal activities
Provides instruction to staff regarding proper handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials
Acts as a consultant to management regarding incorporation of proper design of the workplace
Studies work operations and processes to identify the nature of the work and appropriate workplace design factors
Coordinates with and advises leadership regarding selection of equipment and materials
Develops review standards and evaluates industrial hygiene programs to identify those requiring attention
Selects methods and materials to minimize exposures encountered by patients, visitors and staff
Acts as an advisor to both clinical and administrative officials in review of industrial hygiene requirements for selection of equipment and materials
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday / 08:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/31/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Interprets results of examinations of the work environment in terms of the likelihood of environmental impact on staff, visitors and patients. Serve as a laboratory safety consultant to a robust Research and Development program. Provides direction to leadership regarding the development and implementation of a comprehensive industrial hygiene and occupational health program. Acts as an advisor to both clinical and administrative officials in review of industrial hygiene requirements for selection of equipment and materials OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene OR
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to make recurring inspections, investigations, and field surveys in all areas inside and outside the Medical Center. These tasks will involve climbing, crawling into tight spaces, crouching, working around moving machinery, considerable walking, standing, sitting and bending, while occasionally lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds.
