Utility Systems Repairer-Operator (USRO) performs tasks involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Canandaigua VAMC chiller
plant/ AC shop. USRO will be assigned to the Chiller Plant but is still responsible for being able to assist with campus AC installs, mechanical shop
in the winter months. Incumbent may be required to perform duties normally assigned to other engineering shops on after hour's call ins.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Perform hourly rounds on equipment and records readings in accordance with policies and procedures.
Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics on all equipment as assigned and make repairs as necessary and required.
Maintain logs of scheduled and daily operations.
Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
Use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment during assignments and repairs
Install new equipment and systems
Monitor and communicate with appropriate persons per medical center policy concerning station fire alarms, disaster notification and various other alarm systems.
Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems.
Plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of fire protection systems and equipment.
Perform repairs on systems after conducting diagnostic troubleshooting.
Install equipment by planning and completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment
Reclaiming and charging of all types of refrigerants.
Identify and abate Asbestos Containing Material
Responsible for taking appropriate action in the event of a breakdown or malfunction of equipment.
Independently plans and carries out the objectives using accepted methods, policies, and procedures.

Physical Requirements: Regular walking tours of the plant, main hospital, and outbuildings to conduct inspections of equipment which include
some lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing and stooping. Maintenance and repairs frequently require working in awkward and cramped positions
and lifting to fifty (50) pounds. Frequent standing, walking, and climbing are required while checking equipment. Work involves repetitive
motions over the course of the workday, including turning valves, bolts, nuts, writing reports, climbing ladders safely. Ability to use computer
including typing reports, responding to emails, and reviewing documents on the screen.
Working Conditions: Most work is done inside with routine exposure to surrounding temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit,
chemicals used in boiler, chiller, and water treatment, steam in excess of 300 degrees Fahrenheit, loud noise, and occasional inclement weather.
The use of protective clothing or gear, such as rubber aprons, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, safety goggles, gloves or face shield, is
frequently required. Incumbent will be issued with uniforms, to include pants, VA logo shirts, that are required to be worn in full while on duty.
Incumbent may also be exposed to the following dangers: Electrical shock, Hydrocarbon refrigerants, chemical splashes and burns, scalds, cuts,
bruises, or broken bones.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
