Duties

Serve as the senior journeyman-plan/accomplish assignments by applying skills and techniques in the installation, relocation, testing, maintenance, and repair of aerial/buried cable lines, including cable distribution facilities. Perform the more complicated duties connected with the installation of aerial and buried cable lines, temporary and permanent field cable lines, and the rehabilitation and maintenance of these facilities which requires special skills and dexterity. Test lead covered, plastic-covered, and field cables, and determine electrical and mechanical faults and damages. Locate punctures in cable insulation, remove sections of lead sheath or other insulating material, and test wires for continuity. Install and relocate cables in ducts, manholes, and buildings as well as in the installation of main and intermediate cable distribution frames, cable distribution boxes, cable terminals, and subscriber stations. Lay fiber optic cables in soil, cable shafts and within buildings. Install cable ducts within buildings required for the entire building's installation and data. Drill holes to perform wall and ceiling breakthroughs. Install and replace all material such as sockets.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires a valid, State-issued motor vehicle driver?s license.
  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete a pre-placement medical examination and an annual medical examination in accordance with OTSG/MEDCOM Policy Memo 12-070 in order to lift or carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Telecommunications Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Maintenance of existing, new or modified data network infrastructures; installing telephone systems, alarm circuits, and/or new copper and fiber optic cabling; and troubleshooting a variety of telephone and data equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Work requires frequent bending, pulling cables and wires, using hand tools, working in awkward positions or cramped places, standing for extended periods and occasionally climbing ladders. May lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Work requires use of metal lineman spurs and safety belt to climb poles. Working Conditions: Work may or may not be performed in an area that is adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Works both inside and outside in all weather conditions. Occasionally works in crawlways, in attics and in manholes. Exposed to possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, noxious fumes, asbestos, electrical burns and shock, and falls from high places when installing or repairing aerial cables.
