The Maintenance Mechanic position is assigned to Engineering Service, located at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Hines, IL.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Plumbing:
Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.
Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and layout the' routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of utility systems and equipment.
Installs, modify; and repair systems like those described above by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope, and determining and installing valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of systems.
Installs equipment like that described above by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, and seating, hooking up, and testing the equipment.
Carpentry:
Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.
Constructs and repairs a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding.
Constructs air and weathertight assemblies such as equipment shelters for set up and operate a wide variety of wood working machines and tools.
Assembles items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.
Painting:
Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying precoating agents, for example, pickling and alkali compounds.
Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives. Applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices including those designed to give special effects, for example, brushes, rollers, spray guns, and graining devices.
Makes sure that the coating finish meets match, texture, decorative, thickness, and level requirements.
Applies drywall tape and coatings to finish walls, thin, stir, and mix coating materials according to specific directions.
Maintains interior and exterior painting of all buildings assigned, exterior painting and layout, including but not limited to ceilings, floors, exterior trim, walls, parking areas, gutters, and downspouts.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:30am-3:30pm; Sunday - Thursday 9:00pm - 5:30am. Can be discussed at time of interview.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORTS: The Maintenance Mechanic The work requires a considerable amount ? of walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The Maintenance carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to forty (40lbs) pounds and may occasionally exceed forty (40lbs) pounds.

WORK CONDITIONS:
The Maintenance Mechanic work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. They work area may be dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. The Maintenance Mechanic is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles.
