This position is a Maintenance Worker, WG- 4749-8 working in Shepherdstown, West Virginia for the R9-National Conservation Training Center.

Duties

As a Maintenance Worker your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of intermediate construction, rehabilitation and maintenance work. The position performs trade work which may be performed independently. The position uses a variety of equipment and hand and power tools. The work may exist at small to large sized locations and the work ranges in complexity from low to moderate. The buildings consist of residential and commercial grade infrastructure. The land typically may consist of wildlife management areas, wetlands, and easements. Completes repairs to building and facility electrical systems such as lighting and power fixtures, wiring, fire or water alarm systems, and emergency power systems. Installs outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats. Required to meet local, state, federal, and national electrician standards, Electrical Code, and/or Uniform Building Code licensing standards or certification. Performs routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air conditioning units. Examines and operationally tests electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems for proper operation, fluid levels, cycling, and unusual noises. Removes, replaces, and repairs defective components. Adjusts equipment controls, such as temperature sensors, thermostats, and leak detectors. Performs the maintenance, repair or construction of a variety of Service structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, and other related materials; laying whole brick, block, and stone in straight horizontal rows; removing damaged portions of walls, partitions, or other similar structures in preparation for repair of damage; and tearing out portions of walls for the installation of doors or windows. Conducts maintenance on motor vehicles replace sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines. Clean or replace filters, screens, battery cables and clamps, engine components, and heating and cooling devices. In addition, service and check air conditioning systems including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators and replacing anti-freeze solutions, and aligning front ends of cars and trucks. Perform repairs on heavy equipment and machinery such as removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components; or assisting in disassembling, repairing, and assembling major systems, components, and operating mechanisms. Replace seals and shaft sealing rings, horns, wiring harnesses, starting switches, ignition distributors, sensors, fuel pumps, and water pumps; adjust voltage and current control units, engine idle, brakes, and transmission linkages; clean or replace filters, battery cables, engine components, and injector nozzles. Operates a variety of types of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications on such projects like repairing and breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, tunnels, or construction sites. Heavy equipment may include: bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, backhoes, wheeled equipment/vehicles, and specialized equipment. Implements may include: mowers, cutter bars, drum choppers, augers, plows, harrows, sprayers, discs, string trimmers, etc. Applies herbicides and insecticides using trailer, backpack and hand sprayers. Performs specialized pest control procedures in accordance with product label directions, handbooks, training and regulatory requirements to control noxious and non-native plant species and insects. Disposes of surplus/waste product and containers in accordance with applicable Federal and State regulations. Pesticide certification may be required.

Qualifications

Physical Effort: The employee uses considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. The employee frequently is required to perform heavy lifting and exerts considerable physical effort while using hand and power tools. Work requires extensive leg, arm, and hand movement, standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. The employee uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places. Frequent arm and leg movements are required to operate controls, make repairs, and build items. Working Conditions: Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%). Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common. Employee will be responsible for maintaining grasses and adjacent areas, fences, etc with mowing and string trimming equipment on entire campus; this task will occupy the employee as a primary duty during the growing seasons. Employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment such as: protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items. Serious injury may result from getting caught in operating equipment, or from collisions with automobiles when operating on or near public roads. Work is generally done on stable flat terrain and construction sites, but may be also done on rolling hills, minor slopes, grades, rocky or soft ground, or forests.
