The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a developmental Patent Attorney providing Intellectual Property advice and services, including: conducting legal and scientific research; preparing and prosecuting patent applications; advising and assisting Air Force and contractor employees on rights in inventions, patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, technical data and computer software and other instruments for the transfer of Air Force technology.

Duties

1. Under the guidance of a senior patent attorney, prepare, file and prosecute patent and trademark applications. 2. Under the guidance of a senior patent attorney, advises and assists federal laboratories and Technology Transfer officials on Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property law. 3. Under the guidance of a senior patent attorney, provides other Intellectual Property law and Technology Transfer services, as assigned. 4. Manages docket of inventions. 5. Responsible for the timely completion of administrative duties as assigned by AFMCLO leadership.

  • Must possess a Bachelor's degree in one of the following fields, science, math or engineering
  • You MUST have successfully completed a full course of study in a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and have the first professional law degree (LLB or JD)
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft
  • Incumbent is required to maintain current knowledge of changing statutory and regulatory guidance as they relate to the duties of this position, as well as general developments in technology that may improve the effective delivery of legal services
  • Incumbent is required to maintain Continuing Legal Education (CLE) currency as established by incumbent?s bar
  • Incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required
  • Incumbent must adhere to the Air Force Rules of Professional Conduct
  • This position meets the professional exemption criteria for the Fair Labor Standards Act (5 CFR 551.207)

Qualifications

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: You MUST have successfully completed a full course of study in a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and have the first professional law degree (LLB or JD). In addition, at the time of application, you must provide proof, dated within four months of application, of "active" status with a bar of the highest court of a State, U.S. commonwealth, U.S. territory, or the District of Columbia. On-line information is allowed as long as it shows that you are in "active" status and the date obtained is reflected and within 4 months of the date of the application. A copy of the Bar card is not acceptable proof. Applicants must have at least one year of professional legal experience, or one of the following requirements must be satisfied:. second professional law degree (Master of Laws [LL.M.]), provided it required at least one full academic year of graduate study; superior law student work or activities, as demonstrated by one of the following; academic standing in the upper third of the attorney's law school graduating class; work or achievement of significance on one of the attorney's law school's official law reviews or journals; special high-level honors for academic excellence in law school (e.g., membership in the Order of the Coif, winning a moot court competition, or membership on the moot court team that represents the law school in competition with other law schools); full-time or continuous participation in a legal aid program, as opposed to one-time, intermittent, or casual participation; significant summer law office clerk experience; or other evidence of clearly superior accomplishment or achievement KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of engineering, mathematics, or science obtained by graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in engineering, mathematics, or science. 2. Must be currently licensed as an attorney and counselor-at-law in a state or territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. 3. Must be currently registered to practice as an attorney with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and admission to the patent bar. 4. Competent knowledge, skill and ability of Intellectual Property law and practice, such as copyright, trademark, trade secret and licensing, for example. 5. Competent knowledge, skill and ability of legal research and the general practice of law, including clear and trenchant interpretation and application of law, regulation and policy to specific factual situations. 6. Proficient knowledge, skill and ability of clear and effective scientific, legal and general communication, including public speaking and writing. 7. Proficient knowledge, skill and ability of working with computers, office and administrative equipment and software and the internet. 8. Knowledge, skill and ability of working effectively and professionally with a variety of individuals having different backgrounds, education, and interests. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Must be a graduate of a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, and be currently licensed as an attorney, in active (or equivalent) status and in good standing, with the bar of a U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth. The attorney must maintain such bar membership in at least one jurisdiction during the entire course of employment with the Air Force.
