Duties

If selected for this position, you will serve as a Supervisory Legal Assistant (OA), providing legal assistant and administrative support to the Civil and Criminal Division Chiefs and one or more Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). Duties include but are not limited to: Planning and directing the work activities of assigned legal support staff and coordinating a wide variety of technical legal support services. Developing training plans for assigned employees and conducting on-the-job training. Approving leave requests ensuring adequate coverage during peak workloads. Completing mid-cycle performance progress reviews and preparing annual performance appraisals for legal assistant staff. Providing legal and administrative support to senior management and one or more AUSAs, to include examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents such as motions, subpoenas, orders, pleadings and in proper format. Reviewing and organizing complex factual material and other documentary data for investigations and trials. Providing advice and guidance to legal support staff on the most efficient method for preparing legal documents. Preparing a variety of substantive legal documents to include extradition requests, grand jury and trial subpoenas, interrogatory requests, and documentation relevant to acquiring evidence or testimony. Preparing, developing, compiling, or maintaining jury instructions in preparation for trials. Preparing exhibits for trial which may include providing litigation case management and organizing cases for court presentation. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least ONE year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as Legal Assistant work providing trial support to one or more AUSAs by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, conduct factual research, develop tables of contents and indices to briefs, and prepare courtroom presentations. GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must have at least ONE year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 level. Specialized experience is defined as Legal Assistant work providing legal assistant support to attorneys by preparing a wide variety of legal documents such as complaints, motions, subpoenas, search warrants, orders, and/or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, conduct factual research, develop tables of contents and indices to briefs, and prepare courtroom presentations. Experience providing administrative and technical guidance to legal support staff responsible for providing legal assistant support to one or more assigned AUSAs or supervisory AUSAs; reviewing work performed by others such as legal documents, correspondence, reports, etc. Develops policies used by support staff; provides oral and/or written instructions to support staff to accomplish daily assignments. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
