This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 6), Durham VA Medical Center, Morehead City, CBOC Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service.

Duties

Major Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to: Performs work in the testing and examination procedures carried out in the laboratory Conducts any or all of the following task related to specimens; performs collection, ensures accurate and complete labeling and accessioning, distributes to appropriate areas of the lab, runs through centrifuge and de-capping machines and stores analyzed specimens in racks according to day and lab number Processes specimens through primary analyzers in chemistry, hematology, serology, rapid testing and coagulation Performs a variety of tests which are difficult and complex The incumbent recognizes erroneous lab results and make appropriate clinical decisions based on these results performs routing maintenance on the analyzer and monitor the quality control system following established guidelines and providing documentation as required by CAP and other accrediting bodies Researches test methods and specimen requirements for rarely requested assays and provides necessary assistance on test performance or special studies Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity and specific factors which influence test results Adheres to practices and regulation governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace Work Schedule: 0730-1600 Monday Friday Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/18/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement GS-05: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience GS-05: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of the basic principles of biological science to assess readings and measurements taken; tests executed, observations made, work completed, samples collected, etc.; Knowledge of specific laboratory assays and conditions or substances that interfere with test methods and may alter final results in order to produce quality results; Knowledge of specimen labeling, receiving, processing, and distribution functions in order tp insure specimen integrity; Knowledge of acceptable procedures for identifying patient or specimen in order to ensure accuracy of work, and ability to help resolve identification error ?investigations, discrepancies involving order numbers, and patient data through correlation of clinical data and laboratory records; Knowledge and skill in operating difficult and complex laboratory instruments (devices) used to centrifuge specimens, measure specimens, and evaluate test results. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. (Transcripts Required) OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond an Associate's Degree. You must have in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring light lifting, walking, bending or standing. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, such as in a laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity, such as exceptional hand/eye coordination or color differentiation.
