This position is located at the Yankton Service Unit (YSU) in Wagner, SD, in the Medical Staff Section of the Indian Health Service. The purpose of this position is to provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic medical care to individuals across the lifespan in the outpatient setting. The incumbent will for most part be stationed within the Outpatient Clinics, yet may include work in other areas of the YSU, including Extended Hours clinic, and community outreach area.

Duties

Assesses plans and provides direct and comprehensive primary, therapeutic and preventative medical care Takes a complete and developmental history from the patient and/or family member and performs a physical examination of the patient. Makes diagnosis and decisions concerning medical needs of patients, formulates and implements plan of care. Performs routing therapeutic procedures, injections, immunizations, debridement, suture of superficial wounds, etc. Performs minor surgical and invasive procedures.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Physician Assistant Series 0603 (opm.gov) In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-11 Grade Level: In addition to the mandatory license, certification and education described above under Basic Requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Completion of Doctor of Physician Assistant Studies, Doctor of Science Physician Assistant (DScPA) or equivalent; OR Completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a related health field and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program. Examples of related doctoral degree programs include, but are not limited to, public health; allied health field; public health education; or other related health science programs; OR A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program as described above. Examples of work experience include: Assess patient health by interview patients, perform physical examination, obtain, update and study medical histories; determine abnormal conditions by administer or ordering diagnostic tests; interpret test results; document patient care services by charting in patient and department record; perform therapeutic procedures by administering injections and immunizations; suture, manage wounds and infections; provide continuity of care by developing and implementing patient management plans; prescribe medications. GS-12 Grade Level: In addition to the mandatory license, certification and education described above under Basic Requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirement: A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant (equivalent to the GS-11 grade level) and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program. Examples of work experience include: Outpatient Clinic experience with ability to interview, examine, diagnose, treat or direct course of treatment for wide range of routine situations and/or patients (pediatrics to geriatrics), prescribe and monitor patients. Able to utilize Electronic Health Records. Experience in communicating easily with colleagues and staff both verbally and written. Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only) Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
