The incumbent provides all installations, repairs, and preventative maintenance actions on all electrical, data and communication systems within the Cincinnati VA Medical Center, research facility and 12 offsite locations located in the surrounding communities. Incumbent is assigned a wide variety of duties including the installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and testing of electrical systems, vertical lifts, HVAC, boilers, data, and communication systems.

Duties

The Cincinnati VA Medical Center is a two-division campus located in Cincinnati, Ohio and Fort Thomas, Kentucky serving 15 counties in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana with 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Bellevue, KY; Florence, KY; Lawrenceburg, IN; Hamilton, OH; Clermont County, OH, and Georgetown, OH. Cincinnati VAMC also supports two off main campus locations in the Cincinnati area via an Eye Center and Mental Health Outreach Community Division. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: maintains, installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, loads, and tests emergency generator systems, new and existing electrical circuits, electrical distribution systems, fixtures, variable frequency drives, lighting systems, motor controllers and various equipment. Both single and three-phased primary (up to 12.47KV) and secondary electrical distribution lines, circuits, and equipment at various voltages. Performs maintenance, installation, inspection, modifications, testing, troubleshooting and repairs on a wide variety of electrical, electronic, healthcare, and environmental management equipment to include but not limited to patient beds, stretchers, surgical tables, exam chairs and tables, and kitchen equipment. Maintains, troubleshoots, test and repairs boiler control systems in the heating plant. This involves various interconnected circuits that control the operation of boiler systems. Data and Communication Installation and Repair. The Incumbent installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains complete systems such as fire alarms, audio distribution systems, CCTV, data and communication systems, card access and intrusion alarm systems, and nurse call systems. Elevator Maintenance and Repair The Incumbent performs troubleshooting, modifications, inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance on both hydraulic and traction elevator systems. These systems are powered by one or two speed controls (120 to 480 volts, AC or DC) and may be single or duplex operation, containing a variety of interrelated electronics and electromechanical control circuits. High Voltage Installation, Maintenance and Repair Performs switching, terminations, splicing, testing and repairs to high voltage cabling and equipment. Incumbent performs a wide range of tests/checks relating to electrical safety and equipment operation as outlined by the Joint Commission, OSHA, NEC, HAP, CAP, VA, and other pertinent standards and/or policies. Maintains, troubleshoots, and conducts repairs to automatic door operators, pneumatic tube delivery systems, and specialty medical and imaging equipment. Conducts training sessions designed to update, improve, or upgrade the knowledge and skills of others. Performs miscellaneous tasks of the Engineering Division in emergencies or as needed. Performs the installation of the above-mentioned equipment through rigorous planning, coordination and design while ensuring compliance with equipment specifications and applicable codes and laws. Performs preliminary Electrical design as required. The incumbent installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains complete systems such as street light systems and emergency power systems. Performs maintenance, inspections, and repairs on a wide variety of electrical, medical, office, kitchen, and environmental management equipment. Incumbent receives little to no technical supervision. Must apply ingenuity, judgment and skill in planning and laying out work to meet a variety of unique requirements. Technical guides or diagrams may be incomplete or unavailable for troubleshooting or modification of work required. Incumbent often assists other shops in a variety of duties involving equipment installation, modification, troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Physical Requirements:There is a great deal of physical effort involved with this position because some of the equipment is large and must be maneuvered into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Hoist, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing some units weighing up to 2,500 pounds. The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where equipment and components are located in hard-to-reach places. The incumbent's work is frequently performed in tiring positions, such as: standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, often requiring manual manipulations, and physical strains encountered while performing tedious repairs in hard to get at locations. This work is often strenuous and performed for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: The incumbent is frequently subjected to a wide range of varying work environments. Working conditions include exposure to sunlight / wind / snow / rain / damp or wet conditions. Exposure to these conditions require him/her to wear appropriate attire while performing job duties. Incumbent is occasionally required to work in hallways, laboratories, heating or cooling plants, on top of tall buildings or equipment, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Sometimes required to perform repairs and installations in inclement weather; in work areas that are dirty and or greasy; on scaffolding, aerial work platforms or articulating boom lifts frequently at heights of 30 feet or more. Work could be done in close quarters such as manholes, attics, or crawl spaces. Occasionally the incumbent may be exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, extreme high noise, electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises, broken bones. Work performed in radiography equipment areas including x-ray rooms and nuclear hot labs may present incidental exposure to x-rays, Alpha, Beta or Gama radiation. Uncomfortable face mask, respirators and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is the possibility of exposure to biohazards, asbestos containing materials, radiation, carcinogens, toxic refrigerants, acids, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
