This position of Health Technician in the VA Community Clinics Care Line provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and related activities.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Adjusts equipment of laboratory testing, set up all necessary accessories and supplies regarding laboratory testing, and ensures proper cleaning and minor maintenance of laboratory equipment is performed with adjustments as needed Responsible for point of care laboratory testing which includes Pregnancy Testing, and finger stick blood glucose; knowledgeable of appropriate technique during procedures and informs the teams of critical changes in testing status and lab values Ensures that all quality control materials are run and acceptable daily or as required by regulations; runs any proficiency specimens correctly and within required timeframe Maintains all records for lab certification, point of care testing and maintenance on laboratory machines Collects, labels, processes, stores, and ships specimens that require lab testing not performed at our facilities Monitors and documents temperature and humidity of room and equipment, refrigerators, instruments etc.; performs daily, and monthly maintenance as required and documents such appropriately Organizes work so that efficiency is paramount and work area is neat, tidy, and meets all regulatory requirements for sanitization required for laboratory certification Processes orders and appointments, collects specimens, and evaluates tests for processing determination; contacts providers to correct order errors and to place orders if a patient arrives with no orders in the system Must be skilled at phlebotomy, and the preparation the patient for the blood or urine collection according to The Joint Commission (TJC) guidelines. This includes accepting the patient orders, printing labels, selecting proper tubes and containers, PPE, labeling specimens with all required information in front of the patient Is required to check the expiration date of all reagents and supplies in the room temperature storage room for expiration, sequestering the item, and notifying the supervisor of the findings. Obtains and documents patients' vital signs. Set-up and use electronic thermometers, vital sign measurement equipment, and pulse oximetry. Recognize and report abnormal values to registered nurse (RN). Attach appropriate patients to non-invasive cardiac, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure monitoring devices. Perform EKGs/Ear Flushes and assist with triaging PACT appointments. Work Schedule: 7:00am - 3:30pm Telework: Not available. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-05 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. NOTE: Experience must be fully demonstrated in resume. OR Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. OR Combining Experience and Education: To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
