This position is aligned under the Engineering Service at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, located in Hines, Illinois.

Duties

Maintenance Worker duties include but are not be limited to: PLUMBING: Install escutcheons, plunge toilets, auger toilets, repair faucets, shower heads and other piping repairs/replacement within the facility. CARPENTRY: Change ceiling tiles, install drain tiles, dig holes and trenches, demolish walls, and ceiling grids, remove and install vinyl base cover. Assist with assembly and setup equipment such as ladders, scaffolding, ladder jacks, and stretch boards. Install signs posts and erect displays for exterior signage. Assemble and repair a variety of office furniture such as desks, cabinets, wall units, file cabinets and shop carts. PAINTING: Stir and mix coating materials, apply various coating materials such as paints, varnishes, and shellacs with brushes, rollers, spray guns and other related methods. Employee will perform other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday 7:00am - Friday 3:30pm; Sunday 9:00pm - Friday 5:30am. To be discussed during the interview process. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally handles items weighing up to 100 pounds. Personal assistance and/or lifting devices are used when appropriate to prevent injury. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside, exposed to dirt, sewage, dust, grease, fumes, and refrigerant gases. Is subject to injury from use of hand and power tools, and to burns, cuts, bruises, and electrical shock. May be required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and procedures. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. This would be demonstrated by using skills that involved carpentry, painting, and plumbing; performing maintenance and repair; reading and interpreting work orders, specifications, and blueprints; using and maintaining tools and equipment of various trades. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
