The Geriatrics & Extended Care (GEC) Social Work Supervisor supervises social workers within the Behavioral Recovery Outreach (BRO) program, the Community Living Center, Home Based Primary Care (HBPC), Palliative Care, Hospice unit, Peri? operative Surgical Home Care, in addition to the outpatient programs within the Geriatrics & Extended Care Service Line. The Supervisory Social Worker also supervises the Non-Institutional Care (NIC) Programs.

Duties

Responsible for the professional and administrative management of social work service within GEC. Serves as the backup for the Social Work Service Chief, Homeless Program Social Work Supervisor, Medicine/Surgery Supervisor, Caregiver Support Program Supervisor, and the Polytrauma/SCI/D/Post 9-11 Social Work Supervisor in their absences. Will work in close collaboration with the Chief of Geriatrics & Extended Care and numerous program managers and supervisors within the GEC service line to develop inter-disciplinary responses to various actions items. The incumbent will utilize strong verbal and written communication skills to contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures for various programs. Performs the administrative and personnel management function relative to staff supervised. Incumbent will have established guidelines and performance expectations for staff, clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system. Observes workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques. Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Incumbent works to resolves informal complaints and grievances. Develops work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. The supervisor provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters. Invokes disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Reviews and approves or disapproves leave requests. Assures that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations. Performs a wide range of services and provides technical assistance to State, local, and private agencies, and universities. Technical assistance provided to monitor activities and program reviews, and the development and analysis of information. In addition, the incumbent uses sound judgment in the interpretation of trends and patterns; the application of guidelines; and the recommendation of program enhancements. The incumbent performs program analysis, development, review, research, design, and contact work as possible with various agencies (public, DOD, state, etc.). Performs work related to the review, monitoring, analysis, planning and assessment of various programs including developing dashboards and the presentation of dashboards. Responsible for key project activities related to the planning, development, and implementation of the project component. A substantial portion of the workload directed by this position will be carried out at one or more locations that are physically removed from the main unit under conditions that make day-to-day supervision difficult to administer. Conducts staff development programs and takes responsibility for providing opportunities for staff to update social work skills or acquire new knowledge in contemporary treatment modalities. Information must be disseminated quickly and as expeditiously as possible. Often times, this may include offering specialized trainings to all social workers who provide services, both inpatient and outpatient. In collaboration with Human Resources, tracks licensure for social workers, including continuing education requirements, license renewal and other requirements social workers must meet to deliver appropriate care. Ensures that unlicensed social workers have access to clinical supervision for licensure. Incumbent oversees orientation of new clinical staff regarding social work functions. Develops and monitors staff compliance with social work practice, standards and guidelines on documentation, workload, data entry, ethical practice and service delivery. Incumbent assesses competency of social workers. Will be involved in recruiting, screening, and interviewing social work service applicants. Various duties require an ability to prioritize many different tasks in order to provide the most multi-objective programs consisting of treatment, training and education, ensuring that services are provide in a timely, comprehensive and coordinated manner for each program. Performs other directly related duties as assigned. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as supervisory social workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines. Skill in a range of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement. Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers. Ability to delegate authority, manage priorities, coordinate work, and follow up on pending issues to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion. Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems, develop and implement solutions that result in efficient operations, and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the service. Ability to provide staff training and development.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
