The position is located within the Air Conditioning Section, Engineering Service, at the Northport VA Medical Center in Northport, NY.
Duties
Uses a variety of test and repair equipment such as: voltmeter, ohmmeters, pressure gauge, pipe threader, ampmeter, soldering equipment, measuring devices, basic hand tools and air balancing equipment.
Inspects equipment and frequently monitors both inside and outside air temperature and humidity levels to properly control functions such as heating, cooling, humidification, de-humidification, and filtration.
Installs equipment and parts on a wide variety of A/C and HVAC systems.
Air balances HVAC systems utilizing specialized air balancing equipment such as: FPM and CFM meters and hoods along with calculating and adjusting for proper flows.
Performs emergency maintenance and repair work on equipment, utility and building systems throughout the medical center when directed.
Performs inspections to air conditioning and refrigeration plants and systems.
Makes adjustments and corrections as necessary to prevent breakdown of the equipment.
Checks and logs temperature and humidity levels throughout building.
Uses familiarity with principles of mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic control systems and chemical treatment of water systems.
Starts, regulates, adjusts, stops and services equipment in order to properly maintain air quality, temperature and humidity levels and prevents damage to equipment.
Obtains technical guidance from mechanic handbooks, manufacturers literature, blueprints, regulations, codes and manuals.
Treats all water systems associated with the cooling towers to maintain the proper chemical and chemical level for that system.
Troubleshoots air conditioning and HVAC systems.
Repairs air conditioning equipment and HVAC systems.
Repairs A/C and HVAC equipment, including refrigerators, coolers, freezers, chillers and heaters.
Lays out work, reads and follows manufacturers schematics, writing, installation, maintenance, repair diagrams and instructions.
Performs preventative maintenance and inspections of the air conditioning/refrigeration Equipment and auxiliary equipment in accordance with the preventative maintenance program and/or all standard operating procedures.
Prepares all required logs, data accumulation and reports associated with the operation of the plant and/or the control center as MP-3 Supplement and/or as directed.
Operates all cooling towers associated with air conditioning and refrigeration plants.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shift, depending on the needs of the service.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The person in this position is subjected to high stress situations and must exercise a high degree of judgement on their own initiative. Copes with unexpected conditions and emergencies which may arise during the tour of duty. Must be alert at all times to correct or report malfunctions as they occur. Stooping, kneeling, lifting, climbing, standing, bending, reaching, and walking is done in the course of a day's work which results in prolonged muscular exertion. Required to handle objects and materials weighing in excess of 40 pounds. Operation of all power tools requires alert and skillful handling.
The person in the position is subject to all conditions associated with operation repair and maintenance of HVAC systems and control centers, such as: climbing ladders, kneeling, stretching, working in cramped spaces, lifting, atmospheric heat, cold, etc. Such conditions may be hazardous to health and potentially dangerous. Responsible for adhering to all safety regulations and codes, including the use of all available and issued safety equipment applicable to the air conditioning and refrigeration field.
